The Toronto Blue Jays are interested in signing free agent utility player Steven Pearce to a contract before the start of the 2017 Major League Baseball season according to a report from Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. Pearce had surgery on his forearm in September 2016 which could prevent him from being ready to be on the Opening Day roster of any team in the Major Leagues in 2017 since the recovery time from the surgery is anywhere from four to six months according to Charlie Wilmoth of MLB Trade Rumors. If the Blue Jays sign Pearce to a contract, he will likely be sharing first base duties with Justin Smoak in a platoon role since Pearce is a right handed hitter that would be playing against left handed pitcher of the opponents to the Blue Jays in 2017. Pearce would be a very valuable player for any team that signs him to a contract before the start of the 2017 Major League Baseball season since he can at least two infield positions and all of the three outfield positions.

With Encarnacion basically replaced by Kendrys Morales, Bautista is likely going so Pearce is viewed as his replacement.

You are correct since Encarnacion is likely to be playing baseball for another team in 2017.
