When you think about football, America comes to mind the most but did you know that Mexico has not only men's football teams but women's too? 30 million Mexicans love American football and last night on Monday Night Football, Mexico hosted the Houston Texans (6-3) and the Oakland Raiders (7-2). This was only the 2nd time since 2005 that USA teams played in Mexico. When Mexican fans found out the game was going to be held back in July, it took only 30 minutes for the game to be sold out. 77,000 fans showed up for the game at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City (pop. 21 million) wearing outfits from both American teams. The American National Anthem was played with people on the field holding huge cards above their heads that visualized the full USA flag and then the Mexico National Anthem was sung and the people on the field flipped the cards over to visualize the Mexican Flag. During the playing of the USA anthem, the Mexican people were very respectful. Considering that the altitude of the stadium is at 7400 feet above sea level, our players not only had oxygen units on the side of the field but also in the locker-rooms. The players also had to wear longer cleats on their shoes because of the type of grass on the field. Neither team was playing very well and by the half, the score was 10/10. The Raiders seemed to be the crowd favorite. The final score was Raiders 27, Texans 20. It has been discussed by both countries of having more games featured in Mexico.

I was surprised to hear the location of the game when announced on TV. Such a great way for two countries to come together and share the joy of an event. I hope this love of football does have more games being played in Mexico.
