About Cold and Hot Nights, Sweet Potato and Casseroles

It was cold last night because of the rain, so I did not turn on the electric fan. Sometimes, if it wasn't cold when I went to bed, but gets chilly around 4am, I find myself waking up to switch it off. Do you bother to get up to turn on or off the fan, A/C, or heater when it gets too hot or too cold during the night? Or are you a deep sleeper who can sleep through temperature changes? I like reading about holidays in other countries and just looked up images of sweet potato casserole on Google. We call sweet potato kamote. It's usually eaten as snack or dessert, by boiling and peeling, or sliced and fried with or without brown sugar. Meanwhile, casserole sounds like kaserola in our language, which can refer to a sauce pan or soup pot. From the pictures I've seen online, it seems that sweet potato casserole is a baked dish and more like a snack or dessert than the main meal? Is it different from sweet potato pie? Do other countries also make or bake sweet potato casserole or sweet potato pie?

We have a heating furnace that is set on automatic, if the temperature goes behind the temperature we set, it automatically turns on. We do not need air conditioning, the summers are never too hot, at most I ran an electric fan during the summer nights. I have no hints for the sweet potato pie, we do not like sweet potatoes.

if i lived in a country with four seasons, i would love having that. our windows are always open and we have fans everywhere. i guess you mean you and your husband don't like sweet potato? but other italians do eat it and it also grows in italy?

@LadyDuck i see. it reminds me of broccoli. i always buy it even if it's expensive, yet i know there are people in other countries that don't like it.

@hereandthere Italians (and also Swiss) do not like Swiss potatoes. They grew them a couple of years ago in both countries but they stopped because people do not like them.

i don't change the thermostat here, the hubs wigs out when i do such. i prefer cooler temps when slumber comes. if'n 'tis too warm, i'm schuckin' quilts. if'n 'tis too chilly, i'm tossin' 'em back'n. sweet potato casserole 'tis a side dish. i'd rather sweet tater fries...with parm :)

wouldn't it be great if our bodies and minds shut down and just sleep through the night? sweet potato fries with parmesan would be sweet and salty, right?

I would wake up when it gets too hot while i am sleeping . But now that it's cold at night , i have my electric fan at the foot of our bed rotating slowly , while hubby likes it slow but steady still because he said there seem to be mosquitoes , when i can't feel or see any .

oh, yes, i remember you each have your own electric fans. when there's a brownout and the electricity comes back during the night, i will notice if the lights came back and wake up to switch off everything that was left on.

I always sleep with a fan on, no matter how hot or cold it is. The sound of the fan is always soothing and helps me fall asleep. Also, I am a very light sleeper, and the slightest noise will wake me up, so the gentle hum of the fan helps drown out any other noises that might wake me up.

i think it's called white noise. i'm easily awakened, too, by light, noise and movement, temperature changes and my bladder!

@hereandthere I'm the exact same way! Any changes in light, any movement, and sound whatsoever will wake me up! And yes, even temperature changes! I always get upset when my bladder wakes me up about 45 minutes to an hour before my alarm clock goes off, because I have trouble falling back asleep once I wake up.

Our furnace and air conditioning systems are all set to keep the temperatures on a certain level and temperature. I only eat sweet potato casseroles at Thanksgiving and baked sweet potatoes the rest of the year as part of the main course.

It was raining last night until 5am I guess. Then at the moment, it will rain again later. A hot soup will make the cold atmosphere a bit well.

Sweet potato casserole (dessert or side dish) usually has marshmallows on it although sweet potato pie could too. But I usually don't see it on the pie. I just bake a sweet potato by itself. I don't need anything on it for it to taste good, but a little brown sugar on top of it tastes good as well.

i did notice the white balls on top and thought they must be marshmallows. i've heard of canned pumpkin. do you have canned sweet potato, too? here when we boil a potato, then peel and slice it, we can sprinkle it with sugar and/or butter.

I can handle some temp change, but too much either way bothers me. this time of the year the heat is set to a temp, and if the temp drops too much, it kicks the heat on

it was welcome change because sometimes, even when it rains here, it's back to hot and humid soon after it stops.

We don't have either AC or heating on at night. We have an extra blanket handy if it turns really cold in the night. I've never tried sweet potato in any form.
