I bought her a candle (amongst other things to discuss)

A friend and I were texting last night and she mentioned she had bought me a present. We don't often buy things for each other anymore. A lot of that has to do with both of our lack of communicating about making plans. We are really good friends, but we are both just terrible at keeping in touch. Anyway, I made a note in the back of my mind to come home and start figuring out what to get her. I was looking through etsy at candles when I think i found the perfect one. It's a butterbeer (a la Harry Potter) candle but with the label of "El's Waffles". Now, while I am a fan of the Harry Potter series, I've never smelled anything ButterBeer flavored. I'm not sure if perhaps it's similar to the smell of waffles or not but that is of no importance. "El's Waffles" for those who didn't catch the reference, refers to El (or Eleven) from Stranger Things. Both of us are a fan of that series, and of Harry Potter so I figured that's the perfect gift. I have no idea how much she spent on me, so I might get her something else as well. Well this week is going to be very dragging for me (I've already explained why) but I suppose I could start doing some laundry (some 'not everyday wear" that I've put off washing) and some organizing and decorating as well. The only problem is that I want to earn online to offset some of the cost of Christmas, as well as shop for Christmas too. I'm not very good with time management. Or Motivation. Yeah... So how is your Christmas shopping going? How's the decorating going?

No decorating for me. Christmas shopping? I think I'll just give cash as gifts. Or gift cards.

I try to steer away from giving gift cards or cash, but I know it's becoming more and more the norm now.

@ScribbledAdNauseum why don't you want to give gift cards or cash? I'm curious.

@allen0187 I guess I like the fun of putting a lot of thought and effort into a gift. I know it seems like a lot of people prefer gift cards or cash over anything else, but I like to receive a gift that someone put thought into.

I think that is a cool gift and think she will love it. My shopping is almost done and next need to wrap gifts. I am planning to do some canning and baking then will be done. The tree is decorated out doors and lights are up.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, when I was out of work every item I gave was homemade and the tradition of giving homemade for many of my friends has continued. Nobody knows when times could be hard again and this way there is no pressure to spend money that the other person or I might not have that year.

Is the canning and baking part of the Christmas Gifts? I have a cousin who gives cookies every year. I don't mind much as they are really yummy. I put a few of my mom's decorations up, but need to make space for more. There's really not a lot of space here to work with, so no tree.

@Hatley SAme here, I think. It's still a little too warm in NC for me to really say it's "Christmas." I am enjoying the not so frigid temps though.

I can understand that, Hatley. I'm not feeling especially jovial yet myself.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Once it comes in the house it has to be wrapped so the kids don't see what they got.. so today I spent the day bringing everything in and wrapping it. I'm still waiting on 1 package to be shipped that contains 2 gifts.. but other than that.. I'm done!

wow you are ahead of the game! Good On You! I tend to procrastinate on the wrapping until the last minute.

@katsmeow1213 So hiding it in closets or under beds doesn't work with your kids?

@ScribbledAdNauseum ........ I bet she would be happy with anything you buy here. Maybe a treat she hasn't had for a while. Something she likes.

It might just. I guess I'll have to make a discussion on what I think it smells like when I get it. I"m sitting here trying to wrack my brain on what to get my grandmother. I haven't moved on to anyone else because I want to get hers before I do. Slippers? No, regardless of if they have traction, she could still fall. Pajama bottoms? She's not much of a wearer of those things. A Robe? She has a thick shawl she loves already.. I'm pretty much at my wits end am thinking of getting her a jar of orange marmalade and a loaf of bread!

They does sound like the perfect gift and I bet it smells good. I haven't done any shopping since Friday when I did some online shopping. I still have a ways to go. I got some of the decorating done but I still have to finish that. It will all get done eventually.

I've done some of the decorating but I plan on bringing a couple of more things in as well. I already know what I am getting one other person, it's just a matter of figuring out where to buy it.

@Happy2BeMe That is when I resort to things like the holiday food gift sets. Hot Chocolate or popcorns in a tin for one.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It is always so much easier when we know what we want and just have to find it. it stresses me out finding that perfect gift for somebody when I don't have a clue what to buy them.

I have some outdoor trees put out, and tied up with fishing line. They need a little pizazz though and I am not sure what just yet. Not sure where to put the indoor tree or trees. I know that there is at least one and maybe more down the hill in the shed. I need to go look at your other posts.

Yes, I haven't been very active here in quite some time. I haven't seen a lot of the "Regulars" yet either. My grandmother gave me a church that lights up, it was her mom's. I need to find a good and sturdy place to put it, that is also centralized. I gave my niece one of other decorations for what we call "the kids room." It's where my niece and nephew sleep. I told her I might put some more decorations that were her grandmother's (my mom's) and she got excited about that. We've never been a family to decorate much outside. I do remember my grandmother would put lights in the bushes, but otherwise all of our decor was indoor.

That is a gift I would absolutely love to receive. I love Harry Potter and so do my children! Butterbeer is a cream soda kind of smell. The candle I imagine will smell amazing!

Thanks for the description on the smell, I thought it might have had a sort of caramel hard candy smell to it myself. I hope the candle does smell good, and that she'll like it.

My Monday laundry is done, the cleaning of the house proceeds and the decorations will be put on the coming Sunday. I am almost ready for Christmas.

I tend to do the majority of my "week to week" laundry on Tuesday. A lot of this is old clothes I never wear that need to be washed before donating, or clothes that need to be stored away for summer. I don't think I'll truly be ready for Christmas until the week before. It always seems there's something last minute I have forgotten.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I already washed more than 6 weeks ago all the summer clothes and they are stored until the next late spring. Now it's time to finish the Christmas decorations.

I'm not big on presents, as they mostly add clutter. But I like communicating with people.
• United States

Not everyone exchanges presents anymore. Presents do add a lot of clutter, both when buying for others and receiving from others. I feel like the first week the gifts just stay in one common area until a place can be made for them. Better useful gifts like food or new socks really.

Yes and I know she likes candles. Even though we've known each other for 15 years, sometimes it's still difficult to figure out what to get someone.
