No More Windows

Well not exactly no more windows, I have a new operating system call ubuntu. It's different to say the least. It's from the Operating System from Linux. My son was home from college for the holidays and I knew he was using that system. Apparently that's the operating system that the professors he works with in his research want him to use. He told me that ubuntu doesn't get viruses. That is a plus. It's very fast but strange as well to this long time Windows user as most of us are. He had to do many things to my computer to get this new system downloaded and installed on my computer. Thankfully I have enough space, or memory or ram heck I don't know, that he was able to keep Windows on my computer as well as ubuntu. So I can go back and forth between the two operating systems. So I have been learning how to use ubuntu for the last few days, I still have questions and my son has returned to college but he is only a phone call, or........ what am I saying lol, a text away. I can use netflix if I want to on ubuntu but no sound. It's now asking me to download silverlight or some such thing. I will have to ask my son about that. I also play some games online and one of them won't play at all. So another question I have, but for now when I want to play that game I just switch over to windows. I have to restart every time I want to switch operating systems, but heck I'm retired I have all the time in the world.

It seems to be a Ubuntu day seeing as I posted about it too this morning. You will find it very useful to look at the Ubuntu message boards. People get technical, but if you realise that you can copy and paste any code you need into a terminal you will be fine. There are also a fair few Ubuntu users on Mylot so they will also help you out. I think there is a way around the Netflix problem, but ask on the Ubuntu boards. I found this so you might try Chrome as a browser and see what happens.
Thanks to recent efforts at Netflix and Canonical, Ubuntu now supports watching Netflix with Chrome version 37. Chrome is available to all Ubuntu users with up-to-date installations of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, 14.04 LTS and later. Netflix subscribers who already

I am using Chrome and thanks for the link, I will check that out. Netflix still won't give me sound on Chrome but I will look at the link you sent. Hope that helps.

I have used Ubuntu many times and agree, it is a very good operating system. However, I have not used a dual boot with Windows for many years. There is a vast amount of open source software that can be downloaded, so you will have plenty of programs available for whatever task you require.

@fishtiger58 It is a little messing around to set up, but Amarok is an excellent player.

I don't need much, and just the audio is giving me some problems, but I'm sure my son will know how to fix that.

Sounds a bit more problematic to have to switch between the two. I play games online too and I wouldn't like it if I had to keep switching to play them. I do not watch movies, but do enjoy watching short videos that others have posted. I want to hear what I am seeing too.

It's a long time that my husband uses a Linux based system. He hates Microsoft and when they stopped supporting Windows XP he decided to install Ubuntu. Linux is the system used by most Professors and Universities.

@fishtiger58 My husband is preparing a DVD so that I can install the system as soon as the support for Windows 7 stops.

@LadyDuck I too am not fond of microsoft, they release new OS and they don't work, they still have bugs. They don't care if my computer crashes, they just release OS knowing they aren't ready, but they just want the money. So greedy.

I always wished I'd had someone around who could have taught me Linux. My first few computers were made by Apple and I loved them. When Britt and I married, he hated Apple products, so I switched over to Windows computers and I'm still there. But I keep wondering if I should go back to Apple computers. Haven't really decided yet but I'm doing some research. That said, I'm jealous of you and ubuntu! I hope things continue to go well for you!

@fishtiger58 Yes, those systems are quite complicated until you learn them, and I never found anyone to teach me. You're so lucky to have him! I really hope the audio goes well once he comes back home and gets to that part of it for you.

Thanks so far so good, I will have to wait until my son comes home from college for the holidays to look into the audio part of things, and I did watch him load ubuntu and it looked really complicated to me.

It is new to me. When was Ubuntu released? I have been using Windows for more than a decade. I am also not familiar with Linux.

I'm still using my old windows version 7. If I had a family member that could help with a new system like you have your son, I'd consider learning something new, but for now I'll have to stick to what I have.
