My hubby and I stayed for a few days in the Great Smokies a couple weeks back, and today it is mostly burned down by forest fires. Pigeon Forge and Gatinburg are going up in smoke as I write this. I don't know if the hotel where we stayed has survived or not, but they are evacuating everyone they possibly can from the area.

thankfully the fires've been put out (with some much needed help from mother nature) now. many places that used to be my ol' stompin' grounds're gone, unable to withstand the fury. i'm relieved'n surprised that more folks didn't meet a horrible fate 'fter watchin' videos some'd taken'n posted 'f 'em tryin' to get out. my heart goes out to the critters though. bein' burnt 'live 'r 'f smoke inhalation 'tis plum awful. those that survived 'n now're homeless 'n without their winter caches, with no other food sources 'vailable, too.

Most of the attractions on the main road survived, but 1700 structures including businesses and homes were destroyed in the outlying areas. Lots of devastation.

I has made all the national news. It's one of the most visited tourist areas in the USA.

They showed on the news the main strip of shops and tourist attractions of Gatlinburg are mostly intact, but many of the surrounding homes and businesses have been burned.
