Sportive Fox or: "Mouse, I'll Get You!"

This photo won the first prize in the 2016 competition 'Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards'. It was shot by Angela Bohlke in the Yellowstone National Park, USA. The accompanying text mentions that the fox may have noticed a mouse running under the layer of snow. I have no idea how it could smell it but, obviously, it did and decided to have it for breakfast. Unfortunately, it's only a photo and not a video. I'd like to know how the fox got out of this bizarre situation and if it reemerged with the mouse in its snout. I sent an email to one of the organizers of the competition and asked if I could use the photos. I got the permission and am occasionally going to show you some of the entries. They're really brilliant.

It looks as though the fox has dived out of a low flying plane.

@MALUSE Maybe there is a diving board just out of the picture.

@Asylum I also had this idea. But the hill rises on the right side of the photo. It would be strange if the diving board were on the left side. But then, a diving board would be strange in any case, wouldn't it? :-) What astonishes me every time I see extraordinary wildlife photos is how come that the photographer was at the right spot at the right time with the camera ready for shooting to catch the nanosecond for the perfect photo.

You're right. If it only ran and then jumped and dived, the body should be more horizontal.

I've just found that it is part of a video.
The winning image for the CWPA competition was actually part of a series of 4 images. Enjoy it. Its a remarkable capture alone, but even better when you...

That is an absolutely priceless photo! You might like to know that foxes (and cats and owls) work by hearing in situations like this. That fox trusted his ears and quite likely came up with the mouse between his teeth. A cat, of course, would have used his claws to catch the mouse but a fox's claws are of very littel use for that, so he dives in with his most efficient weapon. What a catch (for both the fox and the photographer)!

Yes, ostriches bury their heads in sand. I don't know why, though.

i wonder how anyone could verify that this is a real fox, alive and not stuffed and i would be suspicious of staging.

The fox could really be so hungry he wants to have the mouse for his meal that he wan't able to think of whatever risk it may take him to dive in that . So brilliant photo , this one .

@Juliaacv Look, how correctly the fox stretches its limbs! It must have been practising for the fox snow dive competition.

Oh my gosh @MALUSE ! The fox looks like he's frozen in time (like a statue). I can see why she won. Yeah, it would be curious to know if he got his lunch.

It's an amazing shot. I wonder where the photographer was when this shot was taken. I too, am a little curious about what happen to the fox after he pry himself out.

Weird and perfect picture. It was certainly deserving an award in a wildlife photo competition.

That is a one of a kind shot. Wildlife, pets and small children are the hardest to capture in a photograph and if you make them pose it just does not look correct.

What a wonderful photo! Oh yes, the questions you're wondering about are no doubt on all our minds, which is what contributes to its success in the competition no doubt.
