It is a matter of diplomacy : if you tell me that I have the fingers of a pianist, I will tell you that I do not play piano, but if you tell me that I have aristocratic fingers and I believe that you are sincere, I will make the wheel like a peacock.

Hmmm... by the looks of your discussion, vanny, you are wanting US to decide if you are a lady or if okra are not really ladies fingers.... I know which way I would vote.... what answer did @TheHorse, @akalinus, @LadyDuck, @ramapo17, @WorDazza, @DeborahDiane and @MarshaMusselman give in response to this discussion?

I believe the phrase was first used sometime in the 19th century when the Okra plant first arrived in the UK. At the time, the head gardener at Kew Gardens was an interesting woman named Lady Hermione Hatton-Smythe who's nickname was 'Green Fingers' on account of her incredible skills as a gardener and the disfigured appearance of her hands after she contracted a rare tropical disease while hunting for exotic plants in South America.
Taking one look at the Okra, her faithful old servant Hargreaves is rumoured to have said "Oh look, it's just like my lady's fingers". And the name stuck.
So there you have it!

That's English for you. My advice. Never try to unravel those mysteries. You will not make any progress. I too have wondered.

@allknowing ... We gave them zero, and look where math has gone...we will give some common sense to their language ...may be there will be some progress in that direction too..for a change.

@vandana7 It seems the name was given years ago when the fingers of ladies were long, slender and tapering.(Not like Yours or mine is beside the point).

Just look at that picture and tell me if you think our fingers deserve to be equated to that vegetable...even if that vegetable tastes really nice after being cooked.

Aw...just when myLot started regaining its dignity you come with ladies fingers touching your body...me thinks you should ask your gf to give it a try ...I mean push the okra in deep freeze and try running on your body...who knows..anything can happen. It is still god's world.

No way...I turned them upside down and again upside down...either way I could not see my nail...and the color green...mine are brown..and my fingers don't taper...to a sort of pointed level...really nothing like my fingers...they look like pyramid shape gone horribly wrong.

Yes, you are right, okra doesn't really look like lady-fingers.
