What did Alabama do in 1836 - any guesses?

United States

This just a little quizz to find out who many of you know the answer. I assume those of you from Alabama know, but what about the rest of you? In 1836 Alabama was the first state to do what? Think about it...it has something to do with this time of year. Hint that probably won't help: Oklahoma was the last state to do the same thing. The feds did it in 1870. Have you figured it out yet? No, then read the link. Photo is mine. http://www.southernliving.com/travel/christmas-south-southern-city-legal-holiday?xid=socialflow_facebook

If I remember well from history lesson, this is the year of the so called "Creek War", but I see from your link that it was also the first state to declare Christmas a legal holiday.

@Asylum For some weird reason, I remember the dates of history, much better than what I did the day before.

I would never have guessed at the right answer. In fact, all that I could think of was the temporary use of Tuscaloosa as the state capital, which has to be somewhere around that period of time.

@AbbyGreenhill This is because Alabama has been an important player in history. Despite Richmond being known by all as the capital of the Confederacy, Montgomery was the original capital.

@Asylum Many years ago -like 1971 - my first husband and drove from Baton Rouge, LA back home to NJ and going thru Birmingham I had a rebel flag and hat and my husband was afraid I'd get shot.

In the very early days, celebrating Christmas was illegal in a couple of states wasn't it?
