THE 'WORRYING' SIDE OF CHRISTMAS.

Kids I believe have the most fun at Christmas. While adults are walking around with furrowed brows, checking and rechecking gift lists, worrying about this, worrying about that - a child's main worry is whether Santa will deliver what was requested. Perhaps it is just my happy childhood memories but my feeling is that Christmases long ago were much nicer than they are now. There was a different feeling in the air - a closeness, a warmth. Gifts were accepted with joy - whatever the price tag- and people remembered the Christ in Christmas. These days, Christmas is so bound to commercial activity that people tend to forget it's true meaning. What are your thoughts?

I feel as you do. I was reading something this morning and someone said that no child should have to wake up on Christmas morning and there be nothing from Santa Claus. Well, my mom did and she had joyous Christmases. They were too poor in the 20s and 30s and the most they got was some nuts and if they were lucky and orange to share. The day was spent playing music and enjoying games and Bible readings. Yes, Christmas has become too commercial and the joy has been wrung out of it for so many people that fell into the material trap. What a shame. Greed ruins everything eventually.

Though gifts are nice to have and give others we forgetting Christ from Christmas makes Christmas meaningless.

I remember how wonderful it was to go carol singing. Now the last carol singing group I saw was probably in 2002.

I'm just wondering, do you know if the word Christmas appears in the Bible? I will do a search and see. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Added December 11: "As Christmas was unknown to the early Christian writers, it must have been introduced sometime after 300." Wikipedia It seems that we don't know when Jesus was born and the early Christians did not celebrate Christmas. (John 8:31-32; 1 Corinthians 4:6)

It was a happier time when I was growing up. Even adults were kind to each other, had smiles on their faces and the atmosphere was friendlier. People helped one another instead of pushing and shoving. People also went to church with smiles on their faces not with the attitude it was something they had to do.

@Kandae11 It's doubtful. Not as long as Satan is alive and well.

That is so true. I wonder if we will ever recapture that spirit?

Christmas has become too commercialized for me. Too hectic.

When you get the chance to take a rest after all the rushing around - then Christmas is over.

I agree with you whole heartedly. I loved Christmas as a kid, but now all it represents for me is stress, because it seems to be all about the presents.

True, I doubt if years ago so many gifts were returned to stores after Christmas.

The media makes -Christmas too commercial. The good thing is that Christmas motives abound everywhere due to that

The other pressures of life intrude on Christmas, too. I try to always remember the Real Meaning of Christmas.

I don't know if it is just "nostalgia" but Christmas used to be a lot more exciting.

I agree. It's so easy to get stressed out about things that really aren't as important as we think they are.

In some small towns in my country, you will find the 'keeping up with the Joneses' mentality. If your neighbor indulges in new drapes , new or additional furniture a new coat of paint for the house, you will try to do the same or more. Even if it means financial problems in the new year,

I agree with you. Christmas used to feel much more relaxed and honest when I was younger. I think as an adult I've heard too many complaints from other adults about having to spend money or not buying or getting the right gift etc. and it is really sad.
