I completely forgot I had something on the stove

and I'm sure I'm not the first one here that's done this! I could not afford ground beef for our chili this week, my DIL and I really wanted some because it was cooling off. Now, of course, it will be 78 today, it warmed up. But I still have to cook the ground chicken I bought. It was $3.99 compared to $7.99 for burger. I realized I still had it in the fridge so put it on the stove then went into the next room to finish my Christmas cards. About 20 minutes later--at least, I have no idea how much time passed!--I finished and happened to hear something on the radio about fast food burgers and remembered my "burger" on the stove! It wasn't too bad but it certainly is cooked through and I'll have to soak the skillet for awhile to get off the stuck-on part. It's a good thing I had it on very low heat or I may have lost the whole pan of meat. I'll put the cooked ground chicken in the fridge or freezer, depending on when the weather forecast says our weather will cool off again! What have you burned on the stove? Do you have any funny reasons for forgetting the stove and burning food?

Pasta and lentils almost and rice are my worst ones as I confide in them to cook slower when sometimes it cooks much quicker and I do keep an eye on everything. I have not burned meat ever but I have dirtied pans without wtanting to and was lucky enough to save the day by catching them just in time phew.

Cooking demands attention and there is so much going on here that I often almost burn things!

@dragon54u I have to pay attention too otherwise I have so much to do every day that I could get carried away with other tasks. All festive wishes to all.

Our smoke dictator goes off often as we cook, especially pizza in the oven too long...

I had to move our smoke detector. It was right outside the kitchen and every time my DIL cooked it went off. We moved it farther into the dining room and now it rarely goes off when she cooks. However, if smoke gets to the detector, which is about 12 feet from the kitchen, it'll go off. I have several detectors throughout the house so we get an early warning, don't have to wait for the smoke to reach the bedrooms.

@dragon54u Ours is the same, it makes life easier, knowing they will go off if there is a fire. One is pretty close to the kitchen up a few stairs in an open area and something burning in the kitchen is announced loudly...

I often burn potatoes I am cooking since I grew addicted to mylot. When I start to smell the baked potatoes, I run to the kitchen and there they are. No water, the part near the pot is burnt. But if you cut the burnt part, they taste as good as baked potatoes. I also learned which is my best pot to burn them

You're funny! There's a lot of food that's perfectly good if you cut off the burnt part!

Omg! Is that your photo of it? I overlooked plenty of food, but can't recall burning anything. Many times I have made a Keurig cup of coffee, walked away, and found it hours later ice cold. We all have duh moments!

No, I don't have a camera so I get photos off a search engine. I've never burned anything as bad as in that photo!! I've let coffee get cold before--I add milk and sugar and put ice in it, it's great in the summer.

@dragon54u LOL! Thank goodness that wasn't your pot! Yes, iced coffee is good in the summer, even black coffee.

This also happened to me just now. How did you clean the pan?

I'm sorry I was not here to answer you before you probably cleaned the pan! If it is a cheap pan I just throw it away. Otherwise I let it sit overnight with an unused dryer sheet in it. The next morning all the gunk comes off fairly easily!

My son and his wife are in Mexico to visit her family for the holidays. Before they left we exchanged gifts and I got a new pan!! I've been wanting one for most of the year! I'll be very careful with this one!

I have done this before! I was cleaning the house, then one of the kids needed me and I totally forgot about what I was cooking at the time! It wasn't a pretty picture. Lol

When the kids need something, I know, we drop everything and concentrate on their needs. I've done that so many times!

Thank goodness it wasn't burnt black. I got in the habit of using low heat because I have to sit frequently and it's a pain to have a chair in the kitchen. That's the only thing that saved the meat!

I love, love, love baking soda! My DIL couldn't get a smell out of a piece of clothing even after washing it. I added some baking soda to the wash water and the smell was gone. It is so useful in so many situations!

When I was just starting cooking, I put butter I put butter in the frying pan and left the room and completely forgot about it. Needless to say that I learned from that lesson!
