I will try to explain it to you , but first you have to understand what is meant by those terms : # retardation : a term meaning DELAY # Mental retardation :it is a state where the growth of the HIGHER brain functions like speech ,memory ,learning ,personality ,mental skills etc are DELAYED :(a child of 12 years with the abilities of an AVERAGE 5 year old ) #Learning disability : as a neurological disability it is a wide term ,meaning the abnormal learning function in mentally retarded people : part of the spectrum of abnormalities in mentally retarded people . BUT Learning disabilities as a group of conditions : is a term usually used for abnormalities where the MENTAL DEVELOPMENT is NORMAL ,but the KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS ACQUIRING PROCESSES ARE ABNORMAL , as in Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) , ...the main distinction is that mentally retarded patient is grossly abnormal ,while someone with learning disability is usually grossly normal but has difficulty learning to read or learning math etc ..That is the difference in my opinion , I will try to provide LINKS to help you confirm this .....
