Here if you work during the official holidays, then you will get paid three times than your income. It sounds good but actually the money will not be that much. As usually the official holidays just last for several days only. Your month salary seems better because of it, but meanwhile you lose the time to spend with your family and friends. But of course it is better to get more when you have to work during the holidays.

In my line of work, working holidays is not a big deal, in fact I prefer it. But in Ireland sometimes people just get another day off elsewhere to compensate the double pay

Salaried people here get a lieu day...we get double bubble Nothing for bank holidays but they are added to our holiday entitlement so it's pot luck if you work or are off but as there are only 2 of us in my job we have to work at least one shift every bank holiday/christmas/new year etc.

For christmas day and boxing day I got double money. For new years eve I get double money....and new years day but I'm not working it. For the rest of the statutory holidays (bank holidays) we don't get extra but they are added to our holiday entitlement.

@youless yes, I'm working until 11pm on new years eve...but that could go one or two hours over but I have new years day off. If it gets near midnight I plan on staying at my hotel and crashing the new years eve party going on there

@celticeagle Why? Doesn't the unions don't work well now?

@youless .....We used to have unions and they were great. Helped us get raises and get fair treatment. Now we have to depend on the government to do it all.

For legal holidays, employees here are paid twice their daily rate.

Even though, it is still difficult for the restaurants to have enough employees during the Chinese New Year.

Yes here they pay... Holidays or even after hours... They call it "OT" pay.. (Over time..) they decide the rate according to the basic salary..

We are paid double if we have to work on public holidays. This is mostly for companies serving international markets but I think most, if not all the companies would get give employees off for Christmas. It seems to be the only holiday which is celebrated wholewide. Also, you are right, although we get more pay, it does not justify the time spent away from family and friends.

In Australia, this doesn't happen so much any more. People get paid a tiny bit extra year round but nothing extra at holiday time. But it does depend on the job you are doing.

I think it is OK for those people who get more when they work in the holidays.
