Favorite "Walk" Songs #2 - "Walk on the Wild Side"

I've used this song in a previous countdown, but it's so good that I couldn't keep it out of this one. #2 in my Favorite "Walk" Songs series is "Walk on the Wild Side" by Lou Reed. Because I've used the song before, I don't want to rehash the same information (and if you really want to learn a lot about Lou Reed, read Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain's punk book Please Kill Me.) All you really need to know today is that Reed is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, as both a member of the Velvet Underground, and as a solo artist. (I did read on Wikipedia that Reed was once kicked out of ROTC for holding an unloaded gun to a superior's head.) Produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson (Bowie's guitarist at the time,) Reed's classic 1972 album, Transformer, contained "Walk on the Wild Side." It was an international hit, reaching #10 in the UK (it's highest chart position anywhere,) and peaking at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was Lou Reed's only Top 40 hit in a career that lasted five decades. It's also notable that Reed actually knew the people he sings about in "Walk on the Wild Side." And most importantly, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch sampled the tune on their song "Wildside."

@teamfreak16 Nice I bet you enjoyed that. I haven't been to a concert in decades but during the 70's and early 80's I went to a lot of concerts.

That seems to be the consensus so far. And rightly so. It's a classic.

I remember hearing that so many times and went to listen to it again just now. It is interesting that he knew these people and took a part of their lives to write his lyrics. What really makes it great is the music, that sort of hypnotic beat going through the song.

A great song. Vanessa Paradis covered the song singing in English. For those unfamiliar with the song, it is heavily referenced by names from Andy Warhol's factory days.

It seems that I saw a video of this with pictures of the individuals in the song and what happened to them. What a legendary song. You and John are on rolls. Two terrific songs. I sure have a hard act to follow!

@teamfreak16 -- BTW, if you've seen my "Musical Menorah" on FB I posted the B-side of this song, "Perfect Day," for today's "candle."

That it is. I'm surprised it was a hit. Those lyrics aren't exactly hit song material.

Did you prefer Aerosmith or Run DMC with Aerosmith? I liked both.
