What if I Ask For a Man's Haircut?

I keep wondering if I could go into this hair shop and ask for the men's haircut. That would save me quite a bit over the course of a year.
I just have short hair and a pretty simple hair cut, I don't think it is more work to cut my hair than to cut a man's hair.
I already use men's unscented deodorant as it costs less and has more grams in a container.
Anything to save a few pennies.

We have places here that offer adult cuts and kid cuts, period. It should not cost so much more just because you are a woman.

@Platespinner I have to disagree with you on that. My husband and I get our hair cut at the same place, by the same person. It takes her far longer to cut his hair then it does to cut mine. I've timed it. There are different circumstances, no blanket statement...

If they can see you are female they will charge you for the women's cut regardless of how they cut your hair. It is completely biased. LOL Many women have short hair and it doesn't take any more effort to cut the woman's hair and sometimes the styles are even the same! I have long hair. I went in to a barber shop just to have my bangs cut. They didn't even touch the rest of my hair. I still had to pay full price for a woman's haircut. LOL

@paigea You're telling me! I didn't know if I should throw a tip in or not. It only took about three minutes. That was with the interruption of another man hitting on the woman that was cutting my hair! They evidently went to school together way back when and he lost contact for whatever reason. LOL

Is there a salon with a good deal? Both my boyfriend and I cut our hair for $15 each :)

@paigea Eek! I usually use a coupon. They normally charge $20, but its $15 with coupon. And his hair is much quicker but yet the same price And we get our hair cut, shampoo & blow out too!

When most women get hair cuts they also get it styled so that may also be the difference.
Are you going to check it out and see what they say?

No, I go to a particular hair salon. They charge $40! And yes they do style it etc. But it seems many men get their hair blow dried and styled also. So, it seems the difference should be by service rendered, not by whether you are male or female.

@paigea I agree. You may need to talk with the manager about it. They may not see that it's a form of discrimination. You may want to do a bit of research first to make sure this situation would fit that bill. Maybe you can get them to change their approach in some way without making them feel coerced.
On the other hand if you like what you get, you wouldn't want to be banned from going there either. But, I still think it should be pointed out the discrepancy. Do you have long hair or short? I don't remember whether you said earlier. If short, maybe they'd give you the same discount. Maybe there's some way to get them to come up with a way around it without you having to force the issue so they'd feel good about it?

@MarshaMusselman I have short hair. While I think this sort of thing is unfair; I am probably never going to be that person who brings it up with the business. I will continue to buy men's deodorant as it is usually in a bigger container and avoid the men/women discrepancy that way. Even though that only saves me a dollar or so each time I buy it.

@paigea I usually do mine with a number 2 guard on it which I think is about 1/4 of an inch. I then take the guard off and get Mrs WorDazza to do the back of my neck and to straighten it. One time she was tidying my neck up and noticed I'd missed a bit on the back of my head so rather helpfully decided to sort it for me. Without the guard on!!!
I had some strange inverse Mohican up the back of my head. I had to re-do the whole lot without the guard. I looked like a convict.
And getting T-shirts on and off was a nightmare for a week or so. It was like my head was covered with velcro!!

That would be an interesting experiment. However, women are a lot more fussy. I cut my hair myself and I do a very low cut. My hair is very straight, so it punks up right away. I love straight standing hair...when it's short.

I am all for anything that saves even a tiny bit of money as it does all add up! I think if your hair is already short as a woman then it wouldn't be much different then a mens haircut and should cost the same! $35 for a womans haircut sounds quite costly. Here a mans haircut is $11.

It wouldn't hurt to ask about getting the lower fee for the men's cut if you have short hair and an easier style to cut. The price is generally higher for women due to the fact that their hair is usually much longer than a man's, plus it is usually styled or permed.
I have no idea why women's deodorant would be more expensive than a man's.

@paigea Goodness gracious! Women of America should march on Washington or something, with all these discriminatory price gouging schemes going on!

@moffittjc Or just march with our pocketbooks I guess. Wear men's shirts and use their deodorant and razors.

I go to First Choice in Canada and signed for the monthly news and money off offer. My hair is short and simple. It costs me around $19 plus a tip..And I've had the same woman who knows my hair and how I like it for years! Go ahead, ask for a man's cut and see what happens. My hair is so short no one would know the difference.

@paigea My hairdresser was just an employee in my town and I went to have my hair cut and she was no longer working there. I asked where she went and she moved to the next town and is now the manager there. The next town is about 5 minutes away....

I heard a similar story on television some time ago. Not so much about the haircuts, but definitely about the deodorant. Products made for men are generally MUCH less expensive than those same products made for women. As for the haircuts, I can see that, too! My husband could go into a barber shop and get a great cut for not much money. Same style of cut in a salon would cost him triple the price. And for me...my hair is very, very long. I trim my own with only a couple of passes of the scissors. But in a salon, they take so much time cutting one hair at a time and charging me way too much money. So I love your idea and I think we should all begin to shop the men's products to see where we really can save money!

@paigea I got a freebie a few months ago and it turned out to be a men's spray deodorant. It does have a scent but it's very faint and smells good to me, so I've been using it. There are some men's clothes, like shirts or tshirts that are easy for us to wear, and those tend to run less expensive than the ones made for women. I've bought men's socks before (usually black ones) that have been very inexpensive and also very soft! Can't think of anything else off the top of my head but I'm sure there are other things. Oh! Razors! Women's razors can break the bank but there are razors made for men that are at great prices.
