My Favourite Part of the House

Jennifer (@LovingMyBabies) asked members to post about their favourite room in their house. I decided the best part of my house is the passage which doesn't really count as a room. When we built, we adapted a house plan to suit our purposes. We'd been to see some display homes and one had an idea we wanted to copy.
On the plan, we took 600mms (roughly 2 foot) off the length of the lounge wall (9 metres/9.8 yards) and it became a storage cupboard with sliding doors. The space has six shelves. So the total storage area is 9 metres by 600mms by 6 (shelves). Basically I never need to throw anything out ever again.
But I do have space in it now. It holds all sorts of things – games, office supplies, linen, CDs, toiletry supplies, medical supplies, backpacks, camera and computer bits and pieces. There is so much room in these shelves that the rest of the house looks quite organised. It is the best thing we ever did.

My favorite spot in my present home would be its well kept grounds and the veranda. I do most of my work on the veranda , most times I even eat there. During the hot summer months I am tempted to sleep there at nights - but good sense usually prevails.

It works a treat. I don't suppose we'll ever build again but I will really miss this when we move.

@jillybean1222 It's the best thing we ever did. The one in the display home was quite small but the idea was good.

Oh, I love the idea. I wish I were so organized. Maybe I will be eventually.

@GardenGerty @jillybean1222 It was such a simple adjustment really but has resulted in so much storage space.

That is impressive! I love shelves and cupboards, anything that keeps things looking tidy.

I like looking at storage options too. Anything to reduce clutter.

@Asylum Well, there is no linen cupboard but there are wardrobe spaces in the bedrooms. We will fit them out ourselves one day if we want to. The kitchen has its own cupboards and the bathroom smallish cabinets so medical supplies and extra towels are all in the 'big' cupboard.

@JudyEv all of them? I probably hate the stairs most as they're steep and I worry someone will fall down them. The rest of the rooms just need to be redone..

@katsmeow1213 Haha. Many Australian homes don't have stairs although more and more are going 'up' rather than 'out'.

Oh dear! That's a shame. What is your least disliked room then? :)

organization if my middle name. I learned long ago that life is easier if things are organized. Love your space!

I get a bit stressed if there is too much clutter around so this really works for me.

I guess mine is the dining area of our apartment, because I spend all my time there.

@teamfreak16 I have trouble keeping paperwork under control - and our table gets covered in paper and other stuff too.

@magallon @HAPPSINGH It certainly is good to have so much storage area. Everything is put away out of sight.

It can be hard to downsize particularly if you have to do it in a hurry. Although I have a lot of storage room now I am still trying to get rid of things I don't need.

It's hard to show it in a photo. It's a long row of shelves, 600mm deep, with sliding doors. It's for storage but it's not really a 'room'.

@JudyEv I understand. Finding things is always a problem. I have some photo albums I need to find.

When we built our own house, we added a closet in what would have been wasted space. Then two years later we added an identical closet in the same spot in the basement. Oh, how I miss those closets.

@JudyEv that was why it was so hard to give up my sewing room....I had bits stored everywhere, now it's almost all in one room.

It is a nightmare if you don't have space for all your bits and pieces. You would have a sewing items that all need homes.
