Because Every Once in a While You Need a Different Kind of Skating Rink

Most of my friends know that my ice princess is a figure skater. She won her first championship at age three and has racked up more first place wins since then at various arenas in New York, Connecticut, and Florida.
My son complains about the cost of her coaches, choreographer, and equipment, including her custom made costumes.
My daughter-in-law complains about getting up at 4:30AM three days a week for before school practice. She complains about driving to coaching lessons three days a week. She complains about after school and weekend practices. She complains about the cost of parking their car in NYC for ice time practices.
But they wouldn't have it any other way.
However, they don't complain when the ice princess chooses to roller skate with her friends close to home. She is 8 years old (going on 18) Lol!
I wonder if her coaches complain.

I have noticed something different with kids in the US. The kids are into countless activities besides their school. My own extended family kids do that. I wonder why.

@DianneN Speaking of broken tailbones once again... I and a few other friends were invited to one of my best friends birthday party. I believe we were 12 at the time. It was at a local roller skating rink. The birthday girl fell down at the beginning of her party and broke her tailbone.

They have her tap dancing off the ice and doing stretching classes, but she leads a full life off ice otherwise. I was always afraid of falling when I roller skated, but did it anyway. I'm not the most athletic person you ever saw. Lol!

I can't imagine the poor girl would want to skate for fun after all that mandatory skating! She must really enjoy it

@DianneN Well all those practices are sort of mandatory, but of course she could quit if she weren't enjoying it.
I understand.. my kids are into music and theater. My 14 year old son is hardly ever home. Right now he goes to play practice right after school, then some nights he'll go to pep band, tonight he'll have drumline. He's always doing something.

@katsmeow1213 The day she says that she's done with figure skating will be fine with us, if that's what she wants to do. Kids need to be exposed to a variety of activities and the more they try, the better it is for them. My days of carpooling are long over. Lol!

I'm sure the coaches aren't complaining . . .unless she canceled on them because of this roller event !
A kid needs to be a kid . . . I'm glad she got to skate with her friends like that - even if it were on wheels .
She's on inlines! Oh my gosh, a fellow skater friend and I went inline skating outdoors at the beach one day . . . and that totally threw us off. We had a bit of hard time recovering the next day when we went to practice ice skating the next day - but that's the adult mentality - I'm sure the Ice Princess had no problems!!

Inlines? Now you're teaching me something else! Go away. I'm still trying to figure out an Axel from other turns in the air. Lol! I hope it didn't mess up her ice skating. The coaches wouldn't be too happy.
She had a rotten coach at her first year at overnight camp. When she got home, her regular coach had to undo all the wrongs she picked up at camp. My daughter in law researched a fabulous coach for her last summer. Whew!
I just remembered something. When I roller skated 105 years ago, I'm positive my skates had four separate wheels like a car. Now I see the difference. Live and learn! Thanks once again.

@much2say I enjoyed reading your comments. Thanks for spending all that time responding. I'm sorry it took me so long to respond. Still catching up here.
What you said was very interesting. I'm sure kids aren't so set in their ways as adults are. My ice princess had a good coach who straightened her out, at least well enough to win a lot of competitions.
I remember Tara Lipinski, But of course wasn't in the know about double axels then! Lol! Thanks so much. You certainly know your stuff!

Now there's something I haven't done in quite a long time...roller skate! I used to love going to the roller skating rink as a kid (and still somewhat as a teenager) to hang out with all my friends and skate. Not sure if you are aware of the roller skating rinks down in the WPB area, but my hangout used to be Atlantis Skateway in Greenacres. Not sure if it is even still there anymore.

@DianneN The place was a dump back when I skated there, so if it is still around, I can't imagine it got any better. I wonder if there are any other skating rinks in places like Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, or farther south in Delray or Boca?
There was another rink called The Palace, in Lantana next to the airport on Lantana Road. I think it closed down now, but I'm not 100% sure.

@moffittjc The one on Lantana is long gone. I will have to check out those other rinks. Do you remember the water tower on Lantana? They are going to build a shopping center and restaurants there. I hope it perks the place up a bit.

Parents can only complain by themselves but not stop her from skating because they know it's where she gets those medals for winning the championship.
She looks matured for an 8 year old . Look at that , she poses like a model . She took it from you maybe .

@DianneN Well , we parents would always complain , but we never deter our children if it is for their own improvement and good .
Yeah , the pink necklace is a give away that she's still so young .
My daughter starts not liking pink when she is already about 7 years old. She finds it a too girly color .

@SIMPLYD You are right about never detering our kids. We want the best for them.
Yes, that pink necklace says she is still a little girl. I'm sure she received it as a gift. Purple is her favorite color, so she says. She's just like her mother, who still loves purple. Lol!

I don't think her coaches complain, unless it's that she isn't spending more time on the ice. Great picture. I love her smile. She also has a very confident stance. She's going places. I expect to see those videos of her when she was 3 during her Olympic career.

What the coaches don't know won't hurt her. Thank you about her smile. She is now loaded up with braces. Lol. She is pretty confident in everything, but still a little pipsqueak. We shall wait and see what the future holds. As I've said before, if she doesn't make the Olympics, she plans on being a Broadway star. 'Nuff said.

Being a ice skaters mom is tough work. She sure is a little cutie and um she does look older than 8 Dianne, yikes they could be in big trouble when she gets older.
