Asking For Money

I remember when I first arrived in Australia my teacher took me and other students to the city. When we got there, we saw a man playing music for money. We , the students, were about to give him some money but our teacher stopped us and told us not to as he should be working instead of standing here asking for money. I didn’t agree with what my teacher had told us. To me, he was working. He was entertaining people. After that, ignoring my teacher's advice, I often give the 'street performers' money as a way to encouraging them for their talents. Today, I came across a man sitting at a corner asking for money. Apart from sitting there asking for money this man did nothing else. Is it right to give him money? Should we give people like him money?
