I was leaving the grocery and was about to turn onto the main road when I saw a dog almost get hit. It look confused and I knew it was only a matter of time before it was killed. I put the car in park and got out, whistled but it paid no attention. Aha, I thought..white dog so maybe it's deaf? Sure enough, hand gestures got the dog to come to me and she jumped into my car. She was a beautiful, affectionate pitbull (American Staffordshire Terrier) with a big smile but she was obviously upset and confused. I went back into the parking lot and managed to calm her and look at her tag. Rucco was her name and thank God there was a phone number! Her family was so glad to get her back, she jumped the fence. When she saw her humans' truck come toward us she was so happy! The picture I've included looks just like her. That's the second time in a month that I've helped a dog. The other one was much bigger, kind of like a St. Bernard but not, and also mostly white. Kind of strange when I think about it. Both white, both in need, both scary to most people in their own way, one because he was so big and the other because of her breed. Anyway, I'm very glad I was in the right place at the right time for Rucca. Have you ever had an experience like this?

They say things come in threes. I wonder if you'll rescue another white dog? Or maybe just another dog?

Wouldn't that be amazing? I just hope it's not a cat, I'm deathly allergic to them. Rucca didn't elicit a bad allergic reaction from me but I did break out in hives where she kissed my arm and cheek. I love animals but I'm allergic to most of them.

@dragon54u That is such a shame! I hope you don't have to rescue a cat then.

Such a sweet looking baby! So was the dog, in fact, deaf?

Yes, her family told me that when I called them. No wonder she was so scared and confused! My own dog is mostly deaf, too, but it's because she is so old.

I would be a little scared to do this because the dog is confused and if you are not experienced it could be unsafe. What you did was very brave, she was very lucky that you found her. We rescued a little cat once with my brother. It was probably hit by a car (I don't know if it was male or female) and couldn't move the legs so we moved it to a safe place and took it to the vet for treatment the nect day. They said it would recover and one of my brother's friends took it in his home. I haven't heard from him since then, I hope they are both healthy and fine.

That was so nice of your brother's friend! I feel so sorry for animals who are lost or abandoned, they don't understand all the cars whizzing by and the noise. Although this dog was deaf I'm sure she was scared. I was not brave, though. I have never been bitten by an animal. Even guard dogs won't hurt me, I don't know why. I love animals and I think they know it.

@dragon54u Dogs can sense the threat and smell the fear. It helps a lot if you are confident with them. We used to have guard dogs when I was growing up and I have some experience but I am not very confident with dogs on the street.

Is there a connection between white dogs and deafness? Rucca was lucky that you were there, you are very kind.

I have seen several white animals that suffered deafness, especially cats. I don't know if color is an indication of a disability in an animal but it seems more than a coincidence. In this case, I was right and it helped me get the poor thing to safety quickly.

@dragon54u You are a very good person for helping out the dogs and for finding Rucco owners for him.

It was, yes! Rucca was a sweetheart. Most dogs would smell the meat in the back seat and eat it but she just sniffed and then sat in front like the lady she was. I feel as if I made a new friend even though I'll probably never see her again.
