It's Really A Nice Surprise BUT....

As you may know, my husband and I had some difficulties a couple of months back. He claimed he doesn't love me. After a few weeks of giving it my all I finally found a moment and the words to explain to him what love is. During the discussion he admitted that he does love me, just not as much as he feels he should. Anyway, during the time in between I told him that I felt we needed a getaway. I had mentioned it to my daughter who said, "Impossible!". When it comes to getting a last minute flight in January to anywhere tropical, peak season is not very doable. She works for the airlines so we only pay taxes for our flights when she books us for them but we also fly standby, or we pay a reduced fare to confirm the seats. Because my daughter pretty much reacts that way to anything I say, I told my husband he needed to talk to her about it. A week or so ago I asked him if he was working on something. He said he was but said nothing else. I decided to check our passports and found that they expired recently. So I filled out the online renewal application forms and yesterday we went to get our passport photos and went to the post office. Now, we could have gone to Service Canada (of which they now have an office in our town) but with hubby working every day next week, he can't make it. I could have gone alone but he said to just send them off via mail. What he didn't tell me was that he already booked vacation time off work.... for the first week in February!!! He has 4 days off at the end of January, is taking the first 4 work days off in February and the next four days are his off days, for a total of 12 days. Now, if he had told me just YESTERDAY that he had done this, I would have taken the darn things in to Service Canada tomorrow instead of having them go by mail. Who knows when we'll get our new passports? I only found this out today when my daughter was working away on her computer and asked me when my husband's vacation is. This, obviously, was the first I heard he had booked off vacation days. If he had only informed me one day earlier, we would be guaranteed to have our new passports by the end of the month. I've been told by friends that it shouldn't take more than 2 weeks but that is a breath-holder. What if there is an issue? I have no idea what days my daughter is trying to book flights for, nor do I know where to. When I originally brought it up I said it didn't matter where - Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Dominican,.... anywhere warm where they could get us on a flight. I haven't asked what she is working on. Let it be a surprise. I just hope we have our passports in time.

@patgalca I was in an almost similar situation with my ex wife, when she admitted she only loved me as a friend. I guess that happens to many couples

I imagine that is why my husband said, "We'll just keep doing they way we are... lots of people do it." But, i knew that he does love me. It's the way he was brought up and the lack of expression he received growing up that makes him question what love really is.

I don't know if anything has been booked. I only know that my husband took the first week of February off as vacation so I hope it doesn't go to waste. I have been told by many people in my country that they have gotten even new applications (as opposed to renewals) within 2 weeks.

@patgalca Oooh. You may receive it before then, you never know. I don't know much about passports, other than the fact that I need to get one if I ever decide to do the NKOTB Cruise.

That is unfortunate - instead of looking forward to your holiday with anticipation, you will be fretting about the passports. I hope you get them in time - perhaps you could phone and explain the situation?

There is a question on the application asking for date of travel or "I don't know". I checked "I don't know". I suppose I should have asked my husband. I just filled out his papers and he signed them. He didn't look them over.

Thanks. I have no idea what is planned. She, my daughter, may be waiting to see when we get our passports before booking anything. Hubby has 12 days off but we won't be going away for that long. We will probably be allowing for delays from flying standby.

My passport expired quite a few years ago. I was a bit naughty and borrowed someone elses to travel and had no problems (worryingly) but I suppose I should get one of my own. My nephew just split up with his g/f last night and my sis sent me a text saying there is a free holiday in August if I want it. They book a really nice villa for a week every year in a different place. But I've developed a fear of flying so doubt I'd go. Hopefully your passports will arrive in time

I wouldn't dare take the chance of using someone else's passport. I've seen enough Border Security on television, plus been through security with my daughter to know not to try and pull that. They examine the passport pictures and some even make you take your glasses off so they can see your face as it is in the photo.

It's silly that I didn't check them sooner. We knew they would be expiring around this time because we applied for them for our Hawaii trip in 2012. They expire after 5 years. Hubby's actually expired December 30th and mine January 3rd. This time we're getting 10 year passports with the expectation of travelling out of the country more often since our daughter works for the airlines.
