Has the Flu bug hit your area? It has in Oregon

We have not been affected, but I was surprised to hear that the hospital beds were scarce because of hundreds of cases of flu. There are apparently fifteen different outbreaks areas in our county. (Statewide is just as bad) The largest local hospital confirmed "255 cases between December 28th and January 9th," according to an article in our local newspaper. All these cases are confirmed by lab tests and there may be many more cases not confirmed . There have been eight deaths since the middle of December, all elderly people. The really surprising thing to me is that just 30 to 40% of the local and state population get vaccinated for flu each year. They are offered at nearly every pharmacy in the state and covered by most medical insurance. I did not get vaccinated for flu for many years, then I got it one winter and came close to needing hospitalization. I get the shot every year now. Do you get flu shots? Have you heard about flu outbreaks where you live?

I am shocked at so many people there coming down with flu .I have not been vaccinated against flu ,Here there hasn't been the outbreak of flu for ages except the bird flu that some people got a couple of years ago in some place.

Half of the population has been hit with flu here. I only have a cold, a bad cold, but there is nothing you can do to stop a cold.

@JamesHxstatic Yes, the vaccinations are free here and highly recommended. In fact most of those who are sick got the flu shot.

@LadyDuck I think that the vaccine has worked pretty well here for those who got it.

@JamesHxstatic - I have had the flu shot every year for at least the past 25 years. When I sold real estate, my firm got us free shots. When I worked at the high school, our district gave us and our families free shots. Now, my insurance covers the shots. I never miss one.

It is a great precaution to take. I haven't missed one since the flu got me ten years ago.

The big news here is an outbreak of the mumps. Even people who have been vaccinated against the mumps has gotten them. Some schools are not allowing any students to come to school for something like the next 25 days unless they can prove they have been vaccinated or otherwise immune to the mumps. Before the mumps news there was talk about a flu outbreak but now the mumps outbreak has taken over the news.

Mumps! Amazing. I suspect that is because people resist getting vaccinated their kids when they are supposed to. That ignorance can cause a lot of problems like this.

@RichardMeister I had a fairly mild case in first grade as I recall. I guess there are different strains (like flu) and better vaccines are needed.

@JamesHxstatic They gave a rundown on how many had been vaccinated and how many weren't. More than 50% were and they still got the mumps. When they asked a doctor about it he said you can still get the mumps even if you have been vaccinated. But I guess it works for most, just not everyone.

I get a flu shot every year now. That's a lot of cases of flu in your area. Flu is an awful thing. I find no significant numbers of flu outbreaks in my area.

Here , some of my officemates have coughs and colds . One had flu . What i prevalent here is coughs and colds because people are not used to having the cold weather . We are already experiencing a cold weather because of the cold front from nearby countries . No , we don't have flu shots . Flu isn't common here .

Most we know do not get flu shots, but also don't get sick. No colds or flu for them! Could it be that they are all very health conscious and mainly eat vegetables and fruits as much as they can? Not sure-

Perhaps, or perhaps they avoid crowds, airplanes, doctors offices and places with high risk of exposure.

We never talk flu shots and living mostly at home we haven't had the flue in ages so we have been blessed that way. Yes there are many stories of flu outbreaks. Here it is toughest on the poverty stricken and homeless. Hope you can avoid that nasty bug.

I haven't even had a cold since I got that flu about ten or so years ago. We are not exposed too much, though Anne does go to docs' offices fairly often.

The Flu has been in West Virginia's northern panhandle. I was vaccinated and luckily did not get it myself but several of my family members did.

Haven't heard of any flu outbreaks for many years now and only my son gets the flu shot annually but never me. I do get sick of flu one every two or three years but nothing serious as to make me land in the hospital. Stay safe and healthy.
