I just lost over $200

United States
January 17, 2017 9:33am CST
Many years ago I was given a few shares of J & J stock. Over the years I allow the dividends to be reinvested. The stock has split a few times, I've made money, I've lost money. I pay attention to this since its really the only stock I own. The stock has been steadily increasing little by little. I got my report a few minutes ago and for the first time in a long time my investment money dropped. Not be a few pennies, but by well over $200. Is there a correlation that in the last quarter a new president was elected? It may be time to sell if continues in this quarter. photo: pixabay.com/en/business-stock-finance-market-1730089/

If you check the analyst opinions you will find some with "irrefutable reasons to sell" while others will suggest even to buy more. JNJ has been a good stock to own for many years. Right now you can find companies with better growth opportunities and that also pay higher dividends, like Medical Properties Trust (MPW) that pays a yield of 7.44%. MPW is a REIT and those companies are legally obliged to returning at least 90% of its net income to shareholders in the form of dividends.

If I sold I wouldn't buy any stock. The only reason I have this is because my father game it to me many years ago.

@AbbyGreenhill I keep my REITs because they pay a high dividend, I bought them many years ago, before the market went up so much. They have kept their value, but I am not interested to sell them, I want to continue to cash the dividends every 3 months.

A falling market value does not always constitute an actual loss because the stock still represents the same amount of the company. If the financial markets reflect badly but the company business continues as usual, then the loss is purely on paper, unless you sell the stock.

@AbbyGreenhill I have known many people to get excited when the price rises and then feel devastated when it falls.

17 Jan 17
@Asylum I don't get excited when it goes up since it only goes up by pennies...

Since I'm not a gambler /////// all of our investments are in things that I can never lose money in. This is just the odd ball that I have. We have a financial team we work with at the bank that takes care of it all.

@fishtiger58 I don't play the market, our money is invested in safe things that are guaranteed not to go down.

Investing to the stock market is always risky. This is why I have to be very careful to it. People say besides analysing the data, you have to also know more about different news. Some may have an effect on the stock market.

I don't own any stock.. but I've been thinking about it.. I'm just not sure how to go about it and how much money I need to get started. I'd really just like to buy 1 share of stock in something that will slowly increase over time.

@AbbyGreenhill I work at one actually and am still clueless how to begin

@katsmeow1213 I am sure you can find lots of information online as to how to get started. Ask your friend is anyone can help?

Buying one share of stock probably isn't easy as they are usually sold in blocks. I don't know but I would assume you have a bank and someone there who could advise you?

@AbbyGreenhill That stockmarket is a real trickster. I've never use it though. Now if people buy more they will really have an investment if it eventually goes up? And they don't fall asleep at the wheel.
• United States
17 Jan 17
@Bluedoll True, buy low sell high is the way to go. It's still a good price so I'm not worrying about it.

I think it will, J and J has been around too many years for anything serious to happen.

Yikes! That's a big drop. I had Fidelity stock for a couple of years. Last year, I cashed out my stock and put it into savings. My mother, aunt and grandfather had stock, too. But it wasn't cashed out, because of probate, and other stuff. Maybe it's a good idea.

I have had this 24 years and this is the first time it lost. Since I didn't pay for it, whatever I get is free money - oh, I will have to pay tax on it of course.
