I Thought I had the Sodium Under Control

I don't know what I ate that could have had a lot of sodium in it. Everything I had yesterday and today was made from scratch and I don't put salt in my food knowing what it will do to me. Right now my right foot is so swollen it reminds me of the movie Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where Violet swelled up like a blueberry when she ate that gum. My left foot is also swollen, but not as much as the right. I might need to get off the computer and put my feet up to get the swelling down. At least I'm getting caught up with my notifications today. How about you? How are you all doing today? Is it sunny or gloomy by you? Thanks for reading.

Today is a good day despite the gray, rainy weather. Come on spring!

If winter keeps up the way it is, I'll join you with hoping for an early spring, and that coming from someone who loves winter.

@Drosophila No sauce. My right foot is still swollen, but not as bad as it was, about half.

My bp med has a diuretic but once in a while my left food (only the left) swells. No matter what I would do the swelling didn't go down. The doc gave me meds (tiny tiny pills) that work within a few hours. Strange thing - we switched my bp to generic and it hasn't happened since.

My BP med is also a water pill. I was doing good until recently. The swelling is starting to go down now, so that's a good thing. I'm glad changing the med to a generic caused the swelling to stop.

@just4him The doc said most people have issue with generics, but I'm backwards! LOL!

@AbbyGreenhill I've always gotten the generic for meds. I wonder if that's the problem I'm facing with the Remicade. It's just not working and it's the fourth medication I've been on for my problem.

I use Mrs. Dash for almost everything and that is salt free. I use McCormick for a few things, but not often. I have lemon pepper, so that should be safe since there isn't salt in it. I'm glad you're doing okay despite the weather.

Since I had 10 teeth pulled, I've been eating nothing but mushy food. I actually looked at the label of the Spaghetti and Meatballs by Hormel and it has 620 mg of salt. Seriously???? The Beef Stew by Dinty Moore has 1120 mg of salt. Good God!! I'm surprised I don't have kidney stones @just4him .

@just4him Making my own food from scratch sounds like the only way to go. And did you know ice cream contains salt????? Why?????

@nanette64 Yes, I knew that. Everything contains salt if it's processed.

Sounds like food you can donate to the food pantry and start making your own. I almost choked on those numbers.

@fishtiger58 Not that I've been able to figure out. The doctor does have me on a BP/water pill and that does work, but not the last few days. Though they're not as swollen as they were.

It is hard to control sodium, because it is in nearly everything. Even some so called fresh veggies have sodium. I think the best thing is to eat all non processed foods, and get some no salt seasoning.

I've done that. I don't eat processed foods since I moved in August.

Since I was diagnosed with hypertension I have discovered so much hidden salt! Making my own food is no guarantee I won't eat more sodium than I should. For instance, I didn't know that beef and chicken bullion had megatons of salt and that even the reduced sodium version has over 500mg of sodium! A serving of ketchup has 67 mg. I was going to add my favorite sauce to a stir-fry until I read the label and saw that 2 Tbl contained 480 mg of sodium!! It's everywhere!! It's hard work avoiding sodium, even if we make all our own food. I hope your swelling goes down soon. I don't have a problem with swelling, my BP just races sky high.

@just4him Yes, I spend twice as long shopping now. It's very discouraging to see how much sodium is in everything. No wonder we're all sick!

@dragon54u Not just the sodium but all the preservatives in our food. It isn't good for anyone and is helping cause the obesity problem we have in the US.

I've been doing that and it does help get the stiffness out of the joints, but does nothing for the swelling.

@celticeagle I just read it and I did break my right ankle and my left leg, not at the same time but several years apart from the other. It's the leg where I broke my ankle where the swelling is worse. So it's the non pit edema.

I do put my feet up so the swelling goes down, and I am doing my best to eat foods with no sodium or a very minimum amount. I cook from scratch so I know what is going in the pot or pan.

@allknowing The swelling is from breaking my legs. My right ankle about 7 years ago and my left leg in 2015. Both legs have swollen since the break.

@just4himI think definitely you should put your feet up.Swelling of the feet is not good.. Most sauces contain salt.So you have to be careful about that.

it is, as usual, gloomy here. sometimes too, i feel my ankles have edema, and i know the reason as being seated in front of the desktop, crossing my ankles, or remaining seated for so long. i also have less salt, less fat, and less sugar in my diet, but my cardiologist said that having swelling is part of the heart ailment that i have
