Another Successful Concert Done and Dusted

It was hard to get photos of the concert that we helped organise recently in an old decommissioned Western Australian country church. Everyone came out for a barbecue at 6pm and the concert got underway at 7.30pm. The duo call themselves Beautifully Mad and are very talented. They gave us a wonderful night's entertainment. The lady, Kris, once had a theatre company and has done a lot of acting; Tony has won an Aria for song-writing and both are talented artists who sell their paintings at prices in the thousands. In the audience was the grandson of the man who had donated a small portion of his farmland for the church along with a couple who had been married there. We thought the wedding had been years before but it was a second marriage for both and only took place about ten years ago. The church itself was built in 1909. The church held about 68 quite comfortably. The generator coped with both supplying lights and heating water for coffee without over-reaching itself and the weather was balmy and very pleasant. All in all it was a most successful evening.

How were the acoustics? Churches always have good acoustics.

The acoustics were really good. We thought it might have been a bit 'echo-ey' but once the hall filled with people it was good.

@JudyEv Yep, bodies serve as acoustic padding. And heaters too.

It was such a cozy 'do" I see. Not surprising therefore that it was a memorable event.

It is nice to be up so close really. None of the musicians seem to be fazed by having people so close to them.

It is no longer a church but it is a lovely place for a small concert like this.

This looks like a very nice setting for a concert, not too many people, but enough to have a good audience.

@JudyEv I guess most of the music in the concerts are folk songs or old songs .

@changjiangzhibin89 Many of the groups write their own songs but might sing a few covers as well. I wouldn't call them folk songs or old songs.

@Jessicalynnt There was room for 10 or 12 up where the altar would have been. Then a few rows of ten and we were there.

@JudyEv My daughter spent last night at Ronnie Scott's jazz club in London. Great music she said, but she felt that the crowd was a bit stuck and condescending. They had dinner there two which she said was good if expensive.

I guess it depends on what you like. One thing people often remark on is how, being so close, they can easily see the interaction between the players and the speed of their fingers or whatever as they play. When we had a jazz concert, some said they didn't like jazz much but came to support the Music Shack. Once they saw it close up they were impressed with the way players handled their instruments and the non-verbal communication. For most, this has to be better than sitting up in the heavens in a massive theatre and watching the players on a screen.

@xFiacre Damian is organising an Australia Day gig in Dublin on 26 February. I hope the crowd won't be condescending there although I guess his group has enough experience now to cope with all sorts of crowds.

Glad it went well. What leads to a church becoming decommissioned? Not enough people in the area?

@TheHorse No reason why not. It might be a bit cold but that's what sweaters and coats are for. Actually supper might get a bit damp too depending on the weather on the day.

Not enough attending services I'd say - and there are less and less ministers around. Built in 1909 it was getting to the stage where it needed some serious money spent on it too and most parishes are pretty strapped for cash. The mortar in the bricks is breaking away. Someone has tried to replace some with cement but the new owner is going to have the brickwork repaired properly with new mortar, etc.

It's a great little building. I don't know what is happening to it next. The owner is not going to turn it into a dwelling. Perhaps it will become a tiny function centre.

That sounds SO cold. I heard a riddle today which you might appreciate. How many Germans does it take to change a light bulb? One because Germans are very efficient and they don't have a sense of humour. I know the last bit isn't really true.
