I Think I'm In Trouble

I wasn't here much yesterday as I had to go get new glasses. I was worried as I knew my long distance vision was not as good as it used to be and I can't see a thing close up. So off I went just knowing I was going to have to get bi focals. How wrong I was. I am now sitting here with my new glasses and am so unhappy and confused as to how to use these glasses. They are not bi focals they are tri focals. Oh man I am not sure how I am going to be able to use these comfortably. They told me to give it a couple of weeks, but already I am ready to throw them across the room. I don' have a problem with the top part of the lens which is for long distance, and the very bottom for reading, it's the middle portion I am struggling with, it's for looking at my computer screen. I feel like I am sitting here with my head in an up position. They told me eventually I won't do that, but at this point I am so unhappy about these glasses. I can't see the entire screen and no matter what they say I think I have to move my head to see everything I want to see. They told me to sit an arms length away from the computer screen but I am actually sitting a bit farther away than that. I know I have to give these a chance and I need to as I paid a fair amount for these. Thankfully I have insurance and it paid half for these glasses but my end was a fair bit of money as well. They also told me that I have an astigmatism and I never knew what that was, but apparently it's an oddly shaped eyeball. I had never been told that all the times I was examined by an eye doctor. They also took a few pictures of my eyeballs to make sure they were healthy. And I'm glad to say they are doing just fine. I did get the anti glare on these glasses and I have to say I really like that. especially for driving at night. Now the headlights coming at me don't have that star burst effect and the glare on the road is not nearly as bad. Sure makes driving at night better. Sorry I just had to vent, I have been up for a while now as I just couldn't sleep thinking about using these glasses. I sure didn't think a new pair of glasses was going to cause me such trauma. I am going to give these a go but at this point I am ready to use my reading glasses I bought at Dollar Store.

I have a few family members that have had trifocals for years-before you could get them with the invisible lines! And I know that there is quite a learning curve when you get them, especially with stairs. So be careful.

Yea mine are the invisible lines, funny you said that about the stairs they told me the same thing at the docs office. I haven't tried stairs yet, thanks for the warning.

I wore contacts for years, and never ever wore glasses, didn't even own a pair. The contacts were put in the second I woke up, and taken out just before bed. Eventually that led to an infection and I was forced to get glasses and stop using the contacts for awhile while my eyes healed. When I first tried to wear the glasses, even though they were the same prescription as the contacts, I couldn't see a thing. I also got very frustrated as I liked to be on my computer a lot, but everything was so blurry. Eventually I did get used to them.. but that transition was a pain!

Contacts is something I would never consider, the thought of putting something in my eyes does not appeal to me. Today is better with the glasses I know I have to give them time

@katsmeow1213 I know a lot of people who wear contacts and they love them, I just can't imagine that.

Better today thanks. I think maybe I will adjust as it is better today. I certainly can see better than I did before I got them.

I am going through the same thing. My old ones were graduated trifocals as well, but it seems that the optimal angle for everything is different from the newer glasses.

That's the problem I'm having I feel like I'm tilting my head back, and me with my sore neck that's not too cool. But moving back from the monitor helps. It's just that middle area of the lens I'm having difficulty with.

The eye doctor tried giving me trifocals a number of years ago. My eyes never did adjust. When I saw her the next time I told her no more trifocals. She agreed. I also have astigmatism - acute astigmatism. It's pretty bad. I have three pairs of glasses. One for my computer so I'm not cricking my neck trying to see the screen as I should.

@just4him I am too, but the middle part is still giving me problems, the part I use to see the computer monitor.

For me it is the middle part of the lens I'm have problems with, that whole tilting my head back, and with my sore neck it's not a good thing. Moving back from my monitor is helping. Today is better and truthfully I'm surprised how quickly I feel I'm adjusting. Yesterday morning however I wanted to cry.

Once your eyes get used to finding the sweet spot, the spot where you use the computer, it will be really good. I have had the trifocals for many years and the hardest part with a new pair is finding the sweet spot. The last ones had to be redone because it wasn't where it should be

Slowly but surely it gets a bit better every day. I did notice the other day I couldn't get it right after I had for a couple of days before that, I was frustrated and just gave up on the computer after a very short time. Today much better I don't quite have that feeling of tipping my head back as much, quicker to find the right head and eye position today.

I have so called "varifocal" glasses, they are more or less as your trifocals, but with more adjustments. I have the same glasses from more than 10 years and NOW I am very happy, but I was not at all when I first tried them, it took a full month to get the habit to use the glasses. My husband has a different astigmatism for each eye, a very complicated situation.

I bet he does have a complicated set of glasses. I have now been wearing them for 4 hours and I am less dizzy, the waves when I walk are reduced, I put my monitor farther back on my desk and sat a bit farther away then usual and it seems a bit better. I know I have to give them a fair shot but early this morning I wanted to cry.

@fishtiger58 Thankfully bi is enough for me. But these are a little stronger than my last pair which was my first bi-....and I still have issues two years later with steps and even walking...I find myself looking at the ground all the time and no I'm not looking for money LOL!

@AbbyGreenhill They warned me about steps and I haven't gone up or down steps yet but I will be careful. But you would see the money if you are always looking at the ground, you could get lucky lol.

I am blinder than I thought I was. I love the distance part of the glasses and also the bottom reading part, I can see tiny print now I never could before, and the distance is really good too. I had no idea I was not seeing distances at all. It's the middle part for the computer, I did push my chair back farther from the monitor and now it's a bit better. I have to give these a try a couple of weeks they said, I paid a lot of money for them over 300 bucks that was my share, the insurance paid the other half. I'm not sure if I can take them back. And sadly yes I need the tri focals.

My daughter got those tri-focals recently and it took her awhile to get used to them. Hopefully you'll be able to use them without much trouble quickly and not toss them across the room

I'm dreading getting my first pair of glasses (which I desperately need), because everyone keeps telling me how bad it's going to be at first, until I get used to them. I'm not looking forward to headaches, dizziness, vertigo, depth perception issues and everything else people tell me I am going to experience when I get my glasses. I already have all these issues already, I don't want to add to my misery when I start wearing glasses!

That stuff doesn't last long maybe a few hours at most is what I'm thinking. Those headaches could be because you are straining to see.

@fishtiger58 I really like mine. I have had them a year and a half now. I can't use them to watch TV while lying in bed though as I would be looking through the bottom while lying in bed. So now I find it annoying that the faces aren't clear, when that never bothered me before. lol

I am getting used to them, but it's the middle part of the lens giving me troubles, I am so frustrated. I use the middle part of the lens to see the computer monitor and I am tired of lifting my head and such. My younger sister also has tri focals and she keeps telling me I will get used to them. I sure hope so.
