Oh snap. I fell in love today.

I fell in love today. It's true. I picked up a 10-year-old client to take him to play hoops, and there, helping answer the door, was a 3-year-old boy I'd never met before. I engaged him, asking his name, and how old he was, and he told me he was three. I held up three fingers as my client's mom told me he was their latest foster child. The little guy followed me around, and asked me if I wanted to see his Thomas the Train, upstairs. I said yes. I admired his Thomas the Train as my kid client changed into his hoops/skateboard clothes, and then sang "The Wheels on the Bus" with him on my client's guitar, which I tuned for my kid client. After I "witnessed" his Thomas the Train, and let him "play" the guitar, he decided I was his best buddy, and continued to follow me around as my client got ready to go to the park. As we were leaving, the little one said, "Bye, Daddy," and I almost lost it. My kid client was good today, and made a couple of age-appropriate fiends at the skateboard park while I talked to the mom of one of his new friends. When I got back to my kid client's house, the 3-year-old found me and wanted to show me the remote control for the TV. I thanked him and helped him "put it back, so it wouldn't get lost." It was he who escorted me to the door and said "Goodbye, Daddy." The kid is part Native American, and tribal stuff is going to come into play. He's been with his foster family a week and seems comfortable there. My client's mom doesnt know if he'll remain with them or have to move on. To my client, after skating and hoops, I said, "I hope you get to keep your new little brother. He seems really sweet." The little guy looks like a male version of my former kid client in Oakland (the one in the picture), who I knew from birth and who is now probably eight or nine. I just wanted to gobble him up and bring him home. I hope they get to "keep" him.

It breaks my heart to know that those poor young boys stay with a family only a short time and then they are moved around like a "postal parcel". The photo of the little guy is lovely, I can imagine the one you saw yesterday looks like him, I understand you are in love.

@TheHorse She is lovely, she does not look like a little Eskimo, she is probably a "Mestizo" a mix of Spanish and Indian ancestors.

@LadyDuck To ME, she looked like a little Eskimo. She was a wonderful kid--happy and smart. I hope she's still doing well. Aren't most Mexicans a mix of Spanish and Indian blood?

The photo is of a little girl I worked with. She is Mexican, though she looks like a little Eskimo to me. She fell asleep on my lap during Disney on Ice. That's some serious love right there.

No wonder you fell for him so badly. What a cute little kid he must have been. It's not the child in the photo is it as I think I've seen that one before.

@TheHorse I didn't realise this was a little girl. She is cute too. Do you still have any contact with her?

@JudyEv No, I've lost touch with her and her family. She was a "spatial rotations queen." When she toddled into my office, we usually did puzzles together while we "talked."

Oh, no, pony! It is never good, nor quick when white laws interfere with the Native Americans living among us! In this boy's case, the ICWA has jurisdictional preference over white courts, which means he is under tribal care. Without knowing any more than you just mentioned, I can predict what will most likely end up being the outcome of that case.... His foster parents will not get to keep him (although, if one or both of your client's parents are from the little boy's tribe, then they MIGHT be able to keep him) if they are both white. The Native American Tribes dislike whites interfering in tribal business. They can actually be quite fanatical about bringing their people back into the tribe's jurisdiction. Not only that, but the U.S, Government also sides with the tribal spokesman in these cases as the tribal rights are equal to the child's rights. It is not a matter of what is best for an Indian child, but what is best for his tribe, as well! SMH!

@TheHorse Well, honestly, IDK exactly what they will decide. I've seen it go both ways, but more often than not, the tribes win in cases like this.

They sure know how to pull the strings of our hearts, don't they. Princess for example...brings her clothing and asks me to help her wear it....kinda privilege...her bro did that for a real long time...nobody else got to make him wear those darned shoes but me...and even if I was asleep, he would wake me, get me to tie his shoes and then leave. It was like saying you are my family...what have we adults done to our worlds..:( God made us beautiful..and like one family...we are hell bent on destroying god's world, isn't it? Sad..

I enjoy doing those little things, like tying shoes. It is sad that many people want to divide and conquer, rather than nurture.

It would be hard to meet and help these kids and then lose touch and wonder if they are growing up well and have what they need to survive. Is the tribal part generally positive?

I honestly don't know. It was framed by the foster mom as something that could get in the way of them keeping the child.
