We are at #6 in my Favorite Independent Record Labels, and that slot belongs to SST Records. Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn in Long Beach, California in 1978 (the label now operates out of Taylor, Texas,) as a means to release the punk band's records. (Fun Fact: SST was originally known as Solid State Tuners, a company started by Ginn when he was 12. He sold World War II electronic equipment. ) (Another Fun Fact: Because of violence at Black Flag shows, the police placed the SST office under surveillance, even going so far as tapping the label's phones.) SST, however, soon grew a sizable roster of up and coming bands that would, eventually, outgrow the label (and a few sued for non payment of royalties.) SST's back catalog boasts records by a who's who of punk and alternative music. Check out this sample: Husker Du, Meat Puppets, Minute Men, Bad Brains, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, and Dinosaur Jr. Impressive, no? Despite their legal issues, SST has released a hell of a lot of great music over the years. I love this label! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

Independent labels always have it hard in the music business. And obviously they cannot compete with the big labels. But they do turn out many great bands in their plight to become a larger label for a certain music genre. I applaud all independent labels for doing what others cannot.

I love indie labels. While bands like Husker Du and Sonic Youth definitely deserved signing with major labels, who knows if I would ever gotten to hear them if it wasn't for SST.

@teamfreak16 Exactly. The little labels do get us to hear very good new bands. Now we are lucky to have the internet to hear new upcoming music. And many artists are actually promoting their own work.

I've been known to buy stuff unheard just because it was on a certain label.

They've put out so much music that I could have made a huge list. I didn't think it would do any good. More than likely there has to be something on their that I bet you'll recognize.

When I was 12, I certainly wasn't thinking about starting my own company, that's for sure.
