Is This Odd Or Am I Wrong

Eleven days ago the grocery store where my son works had a grand reopening as they remodeled the entire store. It looks very nice and I guess they wanted to celebrate. They had amazing sales and I stocked up on lots of things to fill my pantry up. When I went to check out they had an employee giving each customer a yellow carnation and a green helium filled balloon with green and yellow ribbons. Green and yellow are the store colors. My carnation, and clue me in if I'm wrong about the name of this flower, was barely open. I brought it home and my husband put it in water. Over the next week it slowly opened at it's very pretty. It has now been 11 days since I got this flower and the picture shown here I took just a few minutes ago. I can't believe it's still going strong. It's really nice to have a flower in my house it reminds me of spring that I want so badly. I have had flowers in vases before and I don't ever recall them lasting 11 days. How strange. We didn't add anything to the water in the vase. Are carnations if indeed that's what this is, my hubby did tell me but I have forgotten, more hardy in a vase than other flowers? I really thought I would have thrown this flower in the mulch pile long ago. But then I'm not horribly knowledgeable about flowers, I am better at taking photos of them.

Carnations have a long long shelf life, which is why people like them I think!

@fishtiger58 Gloomy is right. We're on our fourth day in a row of fog. I've never seen such fog like this before.

It looks very beautiful. Carnations are suppose to last longer than other flowers, but I don't know because I can kill them just as easily as I can the other ones. I have a black thumb! Since it wasn't opened all the way you might get a few weeks out of it. It looks like it might be dying if those leaves at the top look like they are turning colors to you. That was really nice that they gave out the flowers. I hope you get spring soon.

@fishtiger58 LOL. Winter is just starting, I'm afraid. LOL Hey, on the plus side, at least you have seen snow this year. Didn't you have a little bit of summer when you went with your sisters? It looks like we are going to be cold next week. It is suppose to be in the sixties. LOL Florida winter.

Yea the tips of the petals are starting to die, but I'm pleased how long it's lasted. I hope we get spring soon too sick of the winter.

@mommaj We have actually had only a grand total of 2 inches of snow so far this winter and I'm certainly not complaining. Yes Arizona was wonderful I wore a light jacket there just once, the rest of the time in shirt sleeves. I so wish I could winter in a warm place, but we just can't afford to buy another house somewhere warm.

@fishtiger58 I've bought carnations for my girlfriend to put in a vase in our house, and they have lasted for over a month before.

In the past when I've gotten flowers as gifts, it was the carnation that lasted the longest. It does look like a carnation.

Looking at the photo it looks as though it will last few more days until the centre opens up fully. Kalancheos do that. they last for days on end in a vase. I have a whole lot of them in my garden.

@fishtiger58 They last for months on the plant as well. I am sure you will find a plant or two and they proliferate too.

What a beautiful flower - and it certainly looks like a carnation to me. I had them in my wedding bouquet as I've always liked their scent too. That's a long time for a cut flower to last.

@fishtiger58 maybe roses can stay fresh for long when the water where they are dipped in a vase, has a dissolved tablet of aspirin? it is a common practice here in my country to put a tablet of aspirin in a flower vase to keep the flowers fresh and not wither immediately

@fishtiger58 However, that is a particularly lovely soft yellow colour and big! Most carnations are smaller and tightly woven! plus I usually see them in white, pink or red!
