The last time I visited a zoo (as opposed to a wildlife park) was around 20 odd years ago when my hubby & I were courting. We lived in the UK at the time and we took ourselves off for a trip to London and ended up at the Zoo. It was the era when animals were kept in small cages with no concern for environmental enrichment as we see nowadays. I remember the polar bear (who I believe has now become famous as an example of an animal in distress) who was pacing up and down all day in his small enclosure. It was very sad and as a result of that i'm so pleased that now people have actually taken the time to consider the feelings of the animals and have designed beautiful wildlife parks for them to roam around in. I'm glad the days of the "old fashioned" type of zoo are over. lol

I have only been to a few in Australia. * Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo- this is a wonderful zoo, its like you are at an African Safari not a zoo. * Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney- this is the sister zoo to Western Plains Zoo, still a wonderful zoo but very cramped and small. * Mogo Zoo, NSW- I think this would have to be the best zoo I have been to. It is smllish but a wonderful place. * Nowra Animal Park- another small park but the animals are wonderfully cared for. The best part of my visit to Mogo Zoo and Taronga Park Zoo was the hand-feeding times, I love to see the keepers interacting with the animals.

Giraffe - Just a picture of a giraffe looking at the camera.
I visited a small local zoo in my country I can't remember the name, but my daughter, because of the way the exhibits were situated, was able to pet a giraffe. Although this zoo was really small, I enjoy this zoo more than any others...thanks for sharing...SS

Actually it was a few years ago now. We were meeting some friends in Dubbo so we could travel together up to Queensland and they had been held up, so we decided to spend the day at the Dubbo Zoo. We didn't get to see all of it, due to time constraints but still it was interesting. It is a very large Zoo actually and many of the animals have huge enclosures. We have also visited the Melbourne Zoo several times over the years and been to the Sydney Zoo once, although I had been there many years before, in the pre-married days in fact. :) The Melbourne zoo is probably one of the very best we have seen, with its large open displays; plenty of room to view the animals there in their habitats which are as near to natural as can be made. All of the zoos here in Australia, or should I say all of the larger ones, have very good breeding programs, and they often borrow animals for this purpose. This means that they are not continually mating the same animals to each other, and the offspring are sometimes swapped with overseas Zoos as well. This is more likely to happen where the numbers of a particular animal are falling, and there is a world-wide breeding program going on. I cannot remember too much about the Sydney Zoo, although it is large, for a while there they had some sort of problems. I think they outgrew the site and were then having trouble acquiring additional land adjoining the original Zoo. However, in the end they did find some way around the problem but it took a while to do so, and then they had to built habitats etc. When they were running out of space, they sent a lot of the animals to other Zoos and so were able to build up the animals again without the huge effort it would otherwise have taken. When we go to Queensland later this year, we plan to visit Steve Irwin's Zoo, because it isn't very far from where our friends live. They have arranged that a whole group of us will spend the day there and it is one of the things that I am looking forward to.

You know I never even thought about the breeding problem and the effect that inbreeding could have on the animals within that community. There program sounds really very committed and humane. Really good post and thanks for the comment...SS

I have visited zoo's in 3 states. 1 in NY, 1 in Washington and 1 in Va. I liked the one in Va. the best, it was small, but you could actually pet some of the animals. We have a picture of my daughter petting a giraffe!
