Getting Lost in my Cleaning Project

I have always been very different and not the usual person when it comes to getting organized or cleaning. Today I got off to a slow start and it is almost dinner time and I am finally in the middle of going through my desk area, which is a disaster. Since we moved here 6 months ago, I never got organized. I am trying to finally do it but did you ever realize how long it takes to clean up a mess instead of making it. I am going through every notebook and lots of notes that I put in a box, "until" I get to them. So here I sit and I think this will take me a month just to get rid of lots of things. Just wondering who else struggles with this or is it just me? Any organizational help would be greatly appreciated.

The only way I can organize is to donate or throw things away as often as possible. The less I own, the more organized I am.

I agree. It can be very 'freeing' to own less and less.

@Corbin5 I agree with you. When I lived in Pennsylvania I knew where to get rid of everything. I use to do volunteer work in a shelter so I was always bringing lots of things there. I liked knowing I was giving my things to maybe some of the people I saw each week. It beats just putting it in a clothes drop off.

I am the same way. I let things pile up before I go through them and then it takes so long to get organized again. At work I am much more organized then I am at home.

Once you get organized you have to keep at it...I have always been extremely organized, it's inborn I think. Don't pick up the mail and move it, pick it up and take care of it. Keep up with things on a daily basis.

@AbbyGreenhill You are so right. I use to be like that but I haven't since we moved here. I have to get back on the ball.

@ramapo17 In our 19 years together we've moved 5 times...so each time was an opportunity to clean out stuff, sell stuff, trash stuff....

My desk is always a mess even though I am always trying to keep it organized. Seems as if it's the place to put things when I don't know where else to put them. Other than my closet the rest of my house is fairly organized. I can't offer any specific tips though

I am like you @Marilynda1225. My house is very clean but my computer area is a disaster. I always aim to get it cleaned up but I just don't get it done.

I'm a huge disaster when it comes to organization. My biggest problem is that I have never gotten rid of old clothes .... I still wear shirts I bought back in 1996. So, now that all those old clothes I haven't worn in years have shrunk ~~~~ naturally I didn't gain weight ~~~~ I'll give them to charity if the moths haven't gotten to them and the ones that're kinda eaten up I'll put in a pillowcase to make a cushion for the kitties. But that can wait, I've important work to do here for now

I take it you have lots of stuff in a box to go through. I would tackle this by spending just x minutes a day on it. Over a few days even 5 minutes a day will see a big difference. I might go through the box and discard stuff that is easily discarded so the task doesn't look so daunting. Good luck with it.
