Sanctuary Cities

I'm not a huge Donald Trump fan; however, his idea for withholding federal funds for the cities that want to continue to allow 'illegal aliens' to stay in their cities, is appropriate. I am sick and tired of the MILLIONS of illegals that have been allowed to stay in this country. If you've been in this country for 20 years, still can't speak ENGLISH and haven't gotten your citizenship; what is wrong with that picture!! And then to be on the government dole? Food Stamps, utilities paid for, free medical, housing. And guess who gets to pay for all that? It sure ain't the 'illegal aliens'. And let's not forget about the millions of illegals who were given amnesty. It's time for this to stop.

We have a bunch of sanctuary cities here in the Bay Area, including San Francisco and Oakland.

People who come to the US should learn to follow our laws and speak our language and function in our society.

If I were to move to another country @GardenGerty , I would expect to do that. It's one thing to be the "Melting Pot" of the world, it's quite another to allow the pot to boil over.

We just need to start using common sense again. We've coddled immigrants and crooks and just about everyone else for too long. It's time to "right the ship." I don't mind being a welcoming nation (we are a nation of immigrants, after all), but we need a common sense approach to letting in people and how we care for them.

@nanette64 Then we should have a legitimate means of getting those people into our country quickly and easily, so that they don't have to cross the border illegally.

Well said. I'm tired of criminals being coddled and the police being afraid to do their jobs.

@moffittjc Exactly. We need more people hired in the Immigration Bureau to address the situation.

I'm not sure about the ones who provide cheap labor but stay on the right side of the law. But the criminals? Adios! I'm always amazed when illegals driving on a suspended license are "finally caught" after a hit-and-run accident that left people injured.

Especially here in Texas @TheHorse . The majority of those in jail are the illegals.

I agree that learning the language and culture of a country you move to is justified. I also agree that a country should think of them first when they are clearly having problems. I also agree that illegal immigration and terrorism are big problems. One thing I don't agree to is the way Trump is handling all these things.

I think the only reason Trump is putting his foot down @Daljinder is that because nothing else has apparently worked.

@nanette64 He could have eased people into it. He steamrolled into all of this when the country was clearly divided over this. Now they get angrier and angrier. Angry crowd listen to no one.

There's been some talk lately by our government officials here in Gainesville, Florida, about becoming a sanctuary city. Our city is as left-leaning and liberal as you can get, so I fully expected that they would try and defy Trump this way. But it will be interesting to see if the city is willing to give up millions in federal funds over the issue. It's one thing to talk the talk, but we'll see if they walk the walk. {personally, I would rather keep the millions in federal funds flowing to our city, since I am one of the employees of said city and would like to keep my job! lol}

I for one don't mind this post, in fact I came looking for it to see what you'd written after seeing your comment on Valerie's post. I don't read the papers nor take time to watch any news and what I read here or hear about from my husband or at work is all I know about. I'm glad he's found a way to address the problem. I know that some have them have obtained illegal social security cards too, but possibly that isn't as prevalent now as it once was with the updated ssc sites and stuff. I once hired an illigal alien without realizing it. It wasn't until the ssc number came back and I was told it wasn't attached to the right person that I even knew he wasn't a citizen. Some areas allow them to work and I don't understand how they can do that. Possibly all they need is a green card, but hopefully that too will stop if they've not bothered to get the correct rights to live here.

I realize that the department that handles the immigration problem is over-loaded @MarshaMusselman but for goodness sake, hire more people to handle the influx.,

I am in favor of sanctuary cities really. Also, I heard just today that there are thousands of Latino (from Mexico and South America) people fleeing through the snow to from the US to seek refuge in Canada.
NPR's Robert Siegel interviews Rita Chahal, executive director of the Manitoba Interfaith Immigration Council, about the spike in migrants crossing the border from the U.S. into Canada.

@nanette64 Actually, that article and the Canadian PM himself, indicate that Canada is welcoming refugees.
