Sitting here staring at the screen as I await the approach of the impetus for today's AMAZINGLY GREAT discussion when suddenly I realize it is a Sunday and it may have taken the day off...

...but I did get my tax return filed yesterday. The numbers on my W-2 forms didn't seem quite right to me, though. The Federal tax withholdings were extremely low...I'm still getting some back, but not what I had expected. And I was shocked that I appear to have earned less this year than I have for the previous 5-6. In fact, I found out I am a LOT poorer than I thought I was, earnings several thousand below the 'poverty level' established for 2016. But I don't 'feel' poor...just broke all the time. Maybe I should start claiming Scar as a dependent on my taxes...

Scar surely is a dependent, you can add Rocky and the albino squirrel too, after all you provide food to them.

@JolietJake Add the birds too, the more they are the most you can claim.

We've often lived below the "poverty line", but careful management kept us comfortably unWare of just how impoverished we were. I know people who have triple the income, but seem to be in much more financial difficulty.

Seeing it stated on paper how little I really have kind of freaked me out...but it did explain why I don't have any savings growing in the bank

@JolietJake a few years ago, when the accountant went over the stores books and our income taxes...he asked me what we spent on groceries...monthly. When I answers him, he told me that was impossible...whe couldn't survive on that. I told him...when that's what you have to work with, you become very creative. I thought we wee eating quite well.

Scar is dependent on no-one, unless it's 3am and he wants out... Do you have a category as a medical helper for tax purposes? ;)

It's kind of sad when my total yearly earnings from myLot exceeded my average paycheck pre-deductions

That would be a good one ... a medical carer! After all, Scar is very unlikely to take himself to the vet, so he needs reminding, transport and general solicitation in doing so. He cannot open his packets of food himself, so he needs a human carer to do it for him. He can't open doors (or, if he can, he can't close them), so he needs a carer. It all points to getting a substantial sum of money as a 'registered carer'!

Scar is definitely a dependent. If you let him off the leash, do you think he'd be able to look after himself? Sure, he'd try, but squirrels are hard to catch and most other things are either potential friends/enemies or entirely untasteworthy. Nah! He's a victim of human cosseting and is definitely an infant (by age) and, as such, is a 'dependent' under most definitions. I believe that homeless people over here claim for dogs as dependents, so why not cats?

@JolietJake Well. if a guy in a wheelchair (registered disabled and eligible for a care allowance) manages to catch a fly and eat it, is he therefore able to care for himself?

@owlwings Only if he was smiling widely as his wheelchair rolled down the hill at speed... and the fly got stuck between his teeth.

Everything has to be relativised. I tend to be happy with what I earn while my brother who earns a lot more than me has never enough money to end the month... and he has no cat, like you and me.

I'm a bit confused how my withholding was so small when I haven't changed my deductions any

@JolietJake Maybe an electoral gift ? My taxes are also supposed to decrease this year. We should have presidential elections more often.

At least I know I can (probably) make it when I retire in a few more years...unless social security gets wiped out before I am eligible, I'll make more drawing it than I did this year working

I have to file mine yet, I am calling the tax guy to come over to my house tomorrow. As we are now retired Illinois doesn't take taxes from our pension. Federal taxes do come out so we will not be getting to much either. I think the federal government takes less than if we were working.
