A Disturbing Situation

Last night when I finished my notifications I went to watch a bit of Netflix and relax for a bit. While watching television someone knocked on my living room window. No way was I going to acknowledge whoever it was, especially since it was dark out. He knocked a second time, not as hard as the first, again, I paid him no mind. That is until he knocked on my door. Now I live in a secure building. There shouldn't have been any way for this man to come inside knocking on my door. I cracked the door open to find a man standing there and his pretext for being there - looking for a missing cat. I called the office this morning to report the incident. No, I didn't call the police last night. I told her about what happened and what the man said he was doing. She told me she already had reports about the person and he was indeed looking for a missing cat. Though pets aren't allowed in the complex, it seems a neighbor in the middle section of my building was babysitting a cat and it had gotten away. That neighbor has already been spoken to about having the cat and told none are allowed here, not even temporarily. It did put my mind at rest, knowing the guy didn't have some kind of ulterior motive, and I wasn't in any danger. Though that did cross my mind as I live alone. The gal from the office told me that next time to call the non-emergency police number and report it as well. I'll do that. I just hope there isn't a next time. Have you had disturbing situations in your life? Thanks for reading.

I always imagine someone is breaking in LOL...my imagination runs wild. But if I lived in a secure building I don't think I would worry too much.

So am I. I didn't know what to think when he knocked on my door. I didn't even hear the door buzzer, as you can for the different apartments if they are right around you and I do have two like that. One neighbor across from me, and one next to me.

@DianneN Yes it did. It was when he got inside that every red flag went up. You know I was praying big time.

You just never know now days. Best to be cautious.I had a guy come right in my apartment one time. This was years ago and it in the middle of summer. I had the door open and he came walking right in my apartment. My daughter was small and asleep in the next room. I jumped up and got on the phone. He was so drunk he was staggering and calling me by some unknown person's name. I kept telling him to leave, that I wasn't who he thought I was. Finally he left. I was totally freaked out.

If I am home alone I would not even open the door. I do hope he found the cat for the owners sake.

I don't answer the door in the evening either. I am surprised that he was able to go around from door to door in a secure building. The nocking on the window would send up red flags for me.

One day, when my (now 21-year-old) son was six, I turned on the TV in the morning and learned that there had been a quadruple murder across the main highway, but still only about a mile from the house. I didn't know any of the names mentioned in the news report but hoped that they would catch the murderer soon. I also prayed for the deceased and their family(s). Sometime later that day, my Australian Shepherd and Shar Pit began to bark at the door (Seriously, Roxy was a Shar Pei/Pitbull mix). So, I opened the door as far as the chain lock would let me and was immediately told by the entire Clay County SWAT team to shut the door. Yes, you read that right. The SWAT team, with weapons drawn and aimed, were standing in my yard. While the police were canvassing the area, a neighbor up the road who didn't like me because I would not allow her child to misbehave in my house, told the cops that she'd seen the suspect in and/or around my house. Immediately, my phone rang. It was a detective who was in one of the cars outside. He wanted me and whoever was with me to come out. Of course, that was no problem, but I did have to ask that the officers put down their weapons because my Aussie would snap if they didn't (Sheba weighed 75 lbs). They agreed. So, I gathered both dogs and my son and opened the door. One SWAT member still had his weapon drawn. Everyone yelled at him to lower it. He did, and we came out. I lived in the center unit of a triplex. So, I let them know that both of my neighbors also had two dogs and that the neighbor on their right worked nights, was sleeping, and was also crippled by Polio (so, she would need help getting her dogs and getting out. Once we were all out, they searched through all three units and all three yard before being satisfied that I had not lied. The suspect wasn't there. We were in Orange Park, Florida. By that time of the day, the suspect was already 176 miles away in Tallahassee.

Now that is disturbing. I am glad that it was really someone looking for a cat instead of someone scoping out your living arrangements.

Not at night, thankfully. Most incidents I've run into were in broad daylight where at least one neighbor could see what was going on.
