While we were in Nannup, Western Australia, recently, I saw some beautiful crepe myrtle trees. These deciduous trees are native to eastern Asia and hybrids now give the home gardener a choice of colours, heights and spreads. The trees are also resistant to powdery mildew, a fungal disease which can be difficult to control.
The botanical name is Lagerstroemia indica. White, pink mauve and purple varieties are available but this pink one was stunning. The ruffled petals have a crepe-like texture hence the name. The trunks can develop beautifully coloured, mottled trunks.

@JudyEv I have two different types. One has full blooms and this one here is like paper but the bad thing is they dry up.

@JudyEv Our ornamental cherry trees look like this in the spring. My county of Kent is beautiful in spring with all the orchards in bloom.

@garymarsh6 I can imagine it would be. We have many orchards around here too. Our countryside turns pink when the fruit trees start to bloom.

They are gorgeous. An OZ friend one time sent me some pics of jaracandas. They are lovely too, they don't grow around here, but there might be some in California.
