Disappointing Return at the Hardware Store!

United States
February 16, 2017 11:28pm CST
I went to the hardware store to return 2 bags of 60 lb cement/concrete mix. The reason being? The employee recommended us to try that brand because it's better than the standard, or that is what he claims. We weren't familiar with this brand or formula - so we used not even a quarter of the bag to "test" out the formula and after a day, it wasn't even harden whereas the standard would have been. I went to go make the return today, to get $8+ tax back, to buy other stuff at the store & the customer service employee was nice/understanding. However, the employee beside her didn't mind her own business & goes, I don't think we should accept the bag that was used. .......... When the lady in front of me just returned a DEAD PLANT perfectly fine. Home Depot accepts returns on dead plants, but a concrete that was recommended by your employee does not work & its only $4 bucks a bag! I am getting a gift card back to go spend money back at the store.

Exactly! They aren't even really losing out! What a policy! Was there no way for you to get the $8.00 in cash or charged back to your own card?

@ScribbledAdNauseum I returned 2 bags. - 1 bag is brand new , never used - 1 bag we took a little sample out to see if texture but yes they can't resell it. It is $4 lost to them but, they can use that cement for anything. Even though it is used it wont go to the landfill. :)

@infatuatedbby Oh okay I understand more. She shouldn't have opened her mouth at all. Honestly I do understand that return policies are as diverse as they are frustrating. We have to look at it from both sides (the corporate side and the employees that represent that and us as the consumers). Still though, that employee seemed to have taken the thing a bit too personally.

@infatuatedbby I don't think they can legally resell something like that and that's probably where this one employee got all uppity about it. But yes, I definitely get what you are saying.

I don't like going to Home Depot, as have had troubles with returns. The plant you mentioned I have seen it here also. Its sad to see some people can return items easily and quickly while others have a hard time. I think the store should accept items back that they recommend and they don't work.

@infatuatedbby Do you have a Lowe's? Now when an employee is pushy at Home Depot we walk out and don't buy whatever we came into buy.

@infatuatedbby Lowe's is a good drive for us also. I have been going to Lowe's more lately after I had trouble using the Gardening Club Coupon inside the Home Depot Store, as all the checkout lanes were self checkout. The outside gardening area was open and there weren't any checkers outside.

Unless the plant was sick when it was sold, I don't understand how can it be returned.

Home Depot sometimes sucks, especially when they say online that the item is in stock at the store, and of course, you get there and the shelf is empty. Thanks I wasted the trip. At least you got your money back in a form though. They do have good real Christmas trees though!

I'd hate to have that happen. You can order online and pick up in stores to save a trip! I do that for my dad all the time. :)

Lol so returning a plant someone killed is fine but not a cement that wasn't good quality like the employee promised to figure that one!

You cannot even say you will not go back as you have a gift card. May be that would be the last time there,.

Many shops have the policy if you are not satisfied bring the product back and you reimburse the money. Of course you had to use the product to discover if you are satisfied or not. I am glad you got your money back.

Exactly, that is correct. It always depends on the person when it comes to returning.

That seems fair. Some employees don't know much about anything.

I would have had to asked how you would know a product works if you don't try it. I'm glad the employee returned the value of your money.

Well, the problem anymore, is that these places cannot hire and train the people to be knowledgable most of the time in the departments they are placed in. If unsure they need to state this instead of giving Good advice and then having the item returned. Glad you were able to get a Gift Card.
