Stories from the casino : Grand American Grill

Continuing on with my casino themed posts.  It had actually been several years since moving up here that I was able to go to this area's closest casinos.   Grand Casino Mille Lacs and Grand Casino Hinckley.   Both are located about 1 hour north of me.  Mille lacs is a smaller establishment, however it is nicer if you ask my opinion.  Usually though I end up at Hinckley - because Hinckley has live music for free 5 days a week.  That means it's one more thing to do that isn't related to gambling.  Ironically enough I'm not a big gambler other than my game of bingo.  (Yes you may call me an old lady if you like.)  My first thought was the Grand Casino is an incredibly uninventive name.  Grand?  Really? Couldn't they have thought of something more original?  My first serious boyfriend worked at Grand Casino.  He was working in one of the restaurants.  He wasn't a cook, or a server - but the guy who put the butter on the toast and the parsley on the plate.  His real ambition in life was to be a writer "like Stephen King" however his stories weren't written down for anyone to read they were "just in his head" with no plans to write them.  Apparently he was waiting for someone to discover him.  Now, I'm not too sure how you became famous author like Stephen King, without writing your material down (or at least hiring someone to transcribe it), but... there you have it.  He would tell me stories though, about the kitchen and about working there.  They have a menu item called "Marge's wild rice soup".  Apparently at some time in the past there was a real "Marge" who made the soup.  But after she quit the soup was frozen soup from a restaurant supply place.  I see now that they are tearing out the Grand American Grill - the restaurant where my (ex)boyfriend worked.  How odd that this should make me feel oddly nostalgic, since I don't miss him or the restaurant.
Start your Grand Casino story with a stay at Grand Casino Mille Lacs or Hinckley! You'll enjoy comfortable accommodations, great gaming, concerts and dining.

That is one entertaining story. I am no casino goer, never was. My girlfriends mother on the other hand is a major gambler. Not good. Although she hasn't been to one in quite some time. She has been ill. I actually have never been to a casino. And I am not that far from Atlantic City. Hmm. I guess that is not my cup of tea. But the boyfriend story is a bit funny. Maybe I should will myself to be discovered without doing a thing. That I thought was pretty out there. I would like to actually experience a casino, but not for gambling. A show, some entertainment.

It is too bad that your girlfriend's mother had a problem. That is never a good thing. I hope she can find some help. That's mostly what I go for - not the gambling but the entertainment and people watching.

@FayeHazel Yeah, her mother was not doing good at all, but now the doctors are saying she is getting stronger. Which is good news. I haven't been to a concert or a show in many years now. Maybe at some point this summer I will find something local to go to for some entertainment.

It is odd that seeing a place done away with that we perhaps never even frequented or thought of, can make us feel nostalgic.

I simply had to chuckle about your ex. You put that very nicely! My late husband and I used to go to the casino a few hours from us now and then before we had kids. My parents used to go all the time so sometimes we would go with them.

I know, right? He was pretty... unique... in his ways of thought to say the least. That's pretty fun, I hope you get the chance to go back again if you wish

How does he like it? Almost all of the people working at "grand" have been super friendly and helpful, makes me wonder if it's a good place to work. What does he do there?

I had a laugh about your ex. I'm not into casinos at all, although I have been to a few.

I think there are a few people waiting to be 'discovered' who don't actually have anything concrete to show.

It is sad when a place that you went to is torn down. Lots of places that I worked at went out of business.

It is strange how just bits of news of a favorite place or one with memories hits us in the heart.

A writer that doesn't actually write? Kind of like wanting to be a musician but not bothering to play.

I know, that was a pretty unique thought process there. He had a lot of weird ideas like that though
