My kids got to cash in their piggy banks

I told my kids once their piggy banks filled up they could spend them. Their father used to give him change when he was alive. When we are out walking I point out any coins for them to collect. After 12 years my daughters was just about full. At 9 my sons was about halfway so I decided they should finally spend it as it was taking so long. Yesterday my son and I took his money down to put in the machine but it takes a 5% fee so we asked for papers to roll it ourselves. My daughter and I spent hours yesterday and today rolling them up. We took it all down to return it and my daughter got $57 and my son got $31. I attached a totally unrelated photo of how much our pet caterpillars markings changed over night.

The kids must be so satisfied to see how much they earned. What are their plans now? That caterpillar certainly has changed since I last saw it!

The caterpillar has grown about a centimeter in length as well. My daughter wants to buy Manga books with her money and my son wants to buy video games.

@shaggin Wow! That's a lot of growth! You are certainly teaching you kids the value of a dollar, too.

That was a great activity for them to see how it adds up. It was slow, but slow and steady wins the race.

@shaggin I have all the change he saved still too. I am kind of reluctant to get rid of it. Silly.

My kids never save. Once they accumulate a dollar they spend it on gum at the store, or ice cream at school.

Ha ha that is how my sister was. I preferred to save mine up and then spend it on something better that is what I teach my kids to do as well. As soon as they get birthday money they want to rush right out and spend it all. I try to get them to think hard about purchase before they make them...Especially not daughter who will buy something and not want it a week later.

@shaggin Yeah, I like to spend too. I don't keep money for very long. I'm trying to get better about saving, but even my saving has a purpose, a future goal.. Anytime I have a bit of extra money I immediately start thinking about what I should do with it..

@shaggin Wow, kind of crazy.. but I guess if his bills are paid and he's got a rainy day savings.. then he can do whatever he likes with his money. I tend to spend mine on clothes for me and the kids.. and experiences like shows and vacations.

@Tina30219 yep! We are going tomorrow after they are both done with school! I hate shopping so I am dreading it lol but they will be happy to use their money and seeing them happy will make me happy. I will be going to my boyfriend's house for a few hours this weekend so I figure my son having a new game to play might keep him from crying the whole time I am away.

It is a good thing to learn to save. After this I am going to let them spend whatever they save up once a year. They don't get much change to collect in their piggy banks as they just out in what they find lying around on the ground etc.

Love the photo of the creepy crawly. My kids were allowed to use their own money as they chose, none ever made it to $5, it burned holes in their heads so they spent it on nothing...

It is very hard for most children to save money up as they are so excited to be able to spend it as soon as they get it. Actually I know adults the same way ha ha

Any birthday money they got over the years I would put away half and the other half they could spend? They each will have a few hundred dollars this way when they are adults. I am thinking about putting it into savings bonds but I really do not know how they work.

My great Aunt Donna started saving change for my children as soon as they were born. She's been gone for a few years now, but once she had to be put into a home she had us come over to get the cans. If we hadn't my uncle would have taken them. I don't remember how much each one had, but the youngest didn't get much. She added more dollars to each of them at the end. They were coffee cans. Now I just save all my change in hopes of saving up to pay for my quilt retreats and things like that. I also put $1 in for every check or cash I get too. I have enough to pay for the retreat in April which is great, but there is also a bus trip in June, a retreat in July and a retreat in October...as well as I want to actually go someone during one of hubby's vacation weeks. Guess I better stop blabbing and get to earning!

That is a neat way how you save money for your retreats and things by putting $1 away from every check. I just try not to spend any money on anything I don't need and so my savings does pretty well. That is so sweet your great aunt did that for the children. Your children must have really appreciated that.

At the end of a shopping day, I always put my change into my piggy banks, of which I have about two dozen now. I buy them at the Thrift Store when I see a pretty one at a nice price, usually about $2. I have three piggy banks always sitting right on my kitchen counter. One for pennies, one for nickels and one for dimes. The quarters I keep in a cookie jar. Recently, I rolled my quarters to take to the bank and I had $170. I was shocked.

I know people who do that? Me I just put the change back in my wallet and use it when I have a total at the store that does not come to an exact dollar amount.

What a lovely way to instill good money values. I am sure the children felt a sense of fulfillment or accomplishment. Today everything is so fast paced. The 'throw away or recycle' culture. Nice for a change to see the old fashion values still being passed on in a family. Kudos to you!
