No Ice on Lake Ontario

Canada
February 23, 2017 7:25am CST
We should be buried by snow and freezing our butts off here in Canada at this time of winter. But it's 50 Degrees Fahrenheit right now and by tomorrow it should be summer around 75 degrees. It has been a crazy winter. We had one freezing rain day and two snow falls that gave us one inch each time. That snow melted in a matter of hours. Yesterday we couldn't see out our windows because of fog. We live very close to Lake Ontario (that never freezes because of its depth), but it usually has ice flows all over the place, like in the photo above. The warm weather over the cold lake makes us live in never never land of fog... No ice this year... It is because of "Global Warming" which is not a good thing. Has your weather gone crazy too? The photo above was taken by me in Grimsby, Ontario years ago.

Our weather has gone crazy too, yesterday and this morning we had a dense fog, but the temperature is warm, not like it used to be in February.

@PainsOnSlate Let's hope that this is not the case, winter in March can make serious damages.

Oh, now wait! Isn't that Global Warming stuff all just a myth! Your weather is as nice as ours is. We should be having winter weather and it is in the 70s here again today.

I don't think that the Thames River, which runs thru our area, was frozen very thick for very long this season. We used to like to go for a drive down to the mouth of the river to see the ice floats, but I don't imagine that there will be any this year. They are amazing to see when it occurs though aren't they?

@PainsOnSlate There used to be a nice restaurant out at the Lighthouse Cove, at the mouth of the river, and we'd love sitting there at a window table and gazing out at the huge ice chunks, and rage of the water flow beneath it. We also drove up to Sarnia one year to see the huge ice floats on the St Clair River as they had a lot of ice coming down from the other lakes.

I love looking at the lake with the piles of ice on the beaches, not so much this year ...yet.

@Juliaacv It is impressive when there is a mass of ice. I llike to see it too. When we lived on the lake (when we first moved here) in the winter the waves would crash on the barrier bank and splash the back of our house. I had glass doors with an inch of ice covering them. We tried to get into the back but the ice was so bad we were afraid if the wind blew we would be in the lake...so we left it on the glass. That was before modern cameras, I should look in my albums, I think I have photos of that....

We have fog right now, if it ever burns off today it could hit close to 80. This is not normal weather. Our high should be mid 50

@PainsOnSlate They say the bugs are killing off farmers' winter crops - and that means less crop and higher prices at the store.

It really is, we have seen so many movies put out by science organizations and know its global warming is happening and now we have a president who is going to stop all that has been done so far...

We really only had that one week of winter and that was last week. We got a lot in a week but before that and since that we have had Spring like weather for the most part. The winters are definitely not like they use to be. In my hometown the bay always freezes over and it is all open water. I have never seen that before.

It has been strange and I know here in the fruit belt the freeze helps the trees and there has not been a good one yet. And if the trees bud, and then we get a freeze, there goes the fruit we are famous for.

I once read a prediction after the earth shifted on its axis that it could cause a major drought in areas that have never had droughts before. Hopefully your area will get plenty of rain to keep the plants and trees from drying out.

We like living by the lake (views) but when we lived right on the lake it was polluted, dangerous to swim in and couldn't eat the fish there, I'm thinking its getting better but with all the big cargo ships I doubt it will ever be clean again.

Here in Florida, we basically did not even have a winter this year. I blame global warming for that. It makes me shudder to think about how much worse it can get if this global warming trend continues. We've got to come up with a solution or else this entire planet is in big trouble!

@moffittjc I am both. Born in the states (NY) moved to Canada at the age of 40 ish, been here since. (Hubby was recruited to work here) When our children grew up and wanted to become Canadians (one for politics and one for military), we said why not - by then we were allowed to have duel citizenship so we all because Canadians and kept our American status too. I voted for Obama twice and Hillary got my vote last year. I also voted for Justin Trudeau...

I put my toes into Lake Ontario when we vacationed in Toronto. It was 70 degrees when we were there during the month of April. It's been very mild in Connecticut, too. Here in Florida it's been perfect every day, except for the heavy rain we had during the daytime hours yesterday.

I don't like it, with no real winter we will be covered in bugs that usually die during the winter so that will not be good for this area.

This year is different, ( I wrote this last year) We have had more snow than we have seen in years - about 4 feet but its down to 10 inches now. It is also extremely cold this winter, it takes you breath away its so cold...Christmas was busy for my boys, plowing snow every night, they will be here today and we will have Christmas today. Today it will be Snow Showers and -7°Celsius (19.4 Fahrenheit) And no we can't go out without coats... even last year.
