The Most Beautiful Dairy Of The World

When you are in Dresden, Germany, don‘t miss a visit in Pfund‘s Molkerei, Bautzener Straße 79. According to the Guinness Book of Records, it is the most beautiful dairy of the world. Have you ever heard a tourist asking a resident: "Where’s THE (not ‘a’!) dairy?” The tourist will get an immediate answer even if THE dairy is still miles away. Pfund‘s Molkerei was founded in 1880 and has been in use ever since. Before that time milk came from the villages near Dresden on open carriages once a day. It was difficult to keep it fresh and cool. On the return journey the carriages transported kitchen slops and old clothes. Not very hygienic. The first Herr Pfund in the milk business in Dresden wanted to change that for good. When he moved to the city, he brought six cows with him. The customers could watch when they were milked in the yard behind the shop. The milk was screen-meshed through fine cloth twice and kept cool. The customers liked that and business thrived. The shop was destroyed and rebuilt after World War II. Today, after a successful, thorough restoration not only all kinds of dairy products are on offer (120 different cheeses!) but also a wide range of fine wines from all over the world. The first high quality concentrate milk, milk soaps, artificial milk for babies - they all come from this place. The floor, the ceiling, the walls are full of the most beautiful, elaborate hand-painted tiles and enamelled sculpture, all made by the firm Villeroy & Boch. The tiles depict floral ornaments, landscapes and rural scenes , animals, wild and domestic ones. A small shop sells replica tiles. The restaurant upstairs offers hot meals the stress being, not surprisingly, on cheese dishes. Have you ever seen people leaning leisurely at high tables dangling a glass of milk? The opening hours are: 10:00-18:00 Mon-Sat, 10:00-15:00 Sun. In order not to meet too many other tourists (Pfund’s Molkerei is also a destination for coach tours) it’s best to visit around lunch time. More photos if you're interested:

What a stunning place! Even the photograph shows it to be so and, as we know, photographs rarely do justice to beautiful things. It makes me very sad to know that the original was destroyed in the war but I know that Dresden was almost completely razed to the ground, so it would be surprising if it had survived. How amazing, therefore, it is that all of that marvellous ceramic work has been so carefully and lovingly restored! I heartily applaud the thousands of hours of research, workmanship and dedication which must have gone in to recreating this veritable palace and shrine to the products of the humble cow!

The surprising thing is indeed that a humble dairy has been restored so wonderfully. If it were a church, one wouldn't be so surprised. Although people in Dresden needed houses or at least a roof over their heads badly, it was decided to rebuild the cultural centre of the city, baroque palaces, art galleries, churches, to give the city back its identity. It used to be called Florence on the (river) Elbe. Today the centre is really pretty.

An interesting dairy, a good entry for any travel diary featuring Dresden. I think the Zwinger catches many an eye first, though.

Dresden - Zwinger Gardens
@MALUSE For some reason, on our first visit, we ended up in the Porcelain museum. Subsequent visits had us focus more on gardens and parks than museums. This photo was when we last visited, in 2011.

@pgntwo Jokester! Of course, the Zwinger is a more important travel destination. Yet, I'd put the Green Vault first. Do you know it?

Wow! This is just so beautiful! It is more like a museum for me. I wonder whether the dairy products will be very expensive there? After all, this place looks so fantastic.

Oh my gosh this is so gorgeous! I can see why it would be given the title of the most beautiful dairy in the world. Have you been inside it in person? I would want to take a ton of pictures if I went there? Looks like a wonderful place to serve fresh churned ice cream as well.

Yes, I've been inside. I'm adding a link to more photos. Silly me, I should have done so when I posted the text. You can overlook the German text in the box. It's not important.

Oh my goodness that is lovely. Is it near where you live? My (ex) fiancé was from Austria. I was amazed at the amount of Opera houses, castles, palaces, museums - that he was walking distance from.
