Headache for the last few days... **Updated*

United States
February 25, 2017 1:55pm CST
I figured out why I have been getting a headache the last few days. I keep hearing a ring sound during the day and at night. It is coming from the Duplex across the street, the smoke detector is ringing non stop. They have a live in handy man , he tried to fix it, but when he hit it with a stick, cock roaches fell out. I asked him last night, when will this get taken care of, the sound is in my home, we hear it,we are directly across the street. He doesn't know what to do, so I was able to get a hold of the landlord's phone number, and gave him a call. Over a week with this sound it too much, he is sending someone out tomorrow to fix it. I might have to put some ear plugs on tonight, I need my sleep. **Update** The pink Duplex is the place I am talking about , it is directly across the street from me. This is an old picture, right now there is trash inside the front gate and the pain it chipped, looks bad. I did a before and after of it, the after is with the trash cans in the gate trash all over the ground and clothes out there, looks like a dump. Landlord was here, so I think he lives locally and just wants me to think he lives out of town. The detector is fixed, but in addition , the people in the unit have all been served notices of eviction. They need to be out by the end of March, there are now two security cameras up but will be working next week. Landlord is going to finally monitor the activity and police will be coming down more often to get people out that do not belong there. No more low income people in the duplex. I think this group ruined it for all low income people as, two of them are not bad people, older and don't bother anyone. I think once he gets new people in there and they are paying higher rent, he will be better off and we will not have the issues we have now. The rest of the people here are elderly or people who do not cause problems. Except for the neighbor on the right of me,her son is a problem, but he has been missing for a month.

It is bad,and it is always something, this duplex, is a nightmare, always something going on there. They have never had a good landlord, that will try and make it a better place. At one time this had to be a house, but they turned it in to a money maker. bad idea

The contribution that some neighbours make to disturb the neighbourhood is universal. We have a guy here who has increased the sound of his brakes in his mobike rather than putting a silencer

one person doing bad isn't too bad, a whole complex is just too much. I wish he would silence that bike for you.

@allknowing I can understand, I live on the corner, so they like to do car spinning here, or they call it donuts, burning rubber, spinning in circles..that is bad too.. The police never catch them, they come after it is over.

You should call the fire department and ask them to do something. They will probably have some way to get hold of the landlord. It is probably against your town's noise ordinances for the thing to be going off 24/7. Maybe ask the cops if they can do something? Just don't call 911, look up the non-emergency numbers. I certainly hope you can get something done about it.

@BelleStarr The previous owner had a management company, but the same kind of stuff was going on , so not sure they really did much here.

@CookieMonster46 Oh my goodness that's a lot of people in there. I did study your picture but couldn't quite make out if there were 2 front doors. We have what we call 'semi-detached' houses here, meaning that they are separate houses but have a shared wall. Then there are the maisonettes - one apartment on top of another. But all these have their own kitchens and bathrooms.

@jaboUK can you see two white doors in the front? it is not one door there, but two, there is a wall between them, but imagine a living room, and you take a divider and split it so several people can live in it. That is how the set up is .If they took the dividers down, would be one room. The added the big wall to divide the sides .that is why there was only one kitchen and bathroom, it was a house before..

I put a picture of it up. it is the pink building, they divided a house up , two doors in front, but in side each door is several rooms, They put dividers in each room, to house a lot of people. In the back of this complex is one unit below and an upstairs with two more doors and a lot of people living in each one.The people in the back share one kitchen one bathroom.. The people in front all share one kitchen and one bathroom. Plus they sneak other people in to live there, can you imagine 15 people or more sharing one kitchen and one bathroom.?

That is sad due to a bunch of slobs that now low income people will not be able to live there. They ruined it for people who cannot afford higher rent but might keep it spotless. I can totally understand where the landlord is coming from and hopefully this situation will not happen in the future. As far as the smoke alarm going off that is crazy it took so long to get it taken care of wow!

Today it is a lot worse,it is so messy out front, just so sad..I agree, a lot of other low income people would have kept it up. This group does not, which is sad, that is had to be this way.

I am not sure if this is high up on the ceiling where he can't get to it, I never been in this complex. If the handy man didn't mention it to the landlord,I don't know how he thought it would get taken care of. He may have told the landlord, but he is never around and probably just figured oh well.

@bunnybon7 , according the landlord, he says the handy man, was not able to take care of the detector. It took 3 other people to come in to get it fixed.

That counts as a nuisance noise in my book. If someone doesn't come fix it tomorrow, report it. They are creating a hostile environment by ignoring it. I'm surprised the handyman didn't just disconnect it until it can be fixed.

The landlord just showed up... I think he is lying when he says he lives some place else, because he just showed up a bit ago. From what I see, when the door opens there is a flight of stairs to get to the top rooms. so this smoke detector can be high up and not easy to reach. I am only guess this is why he didn't disconnect it. Right now it is still ringing, but he has both doors open and walking around with a clip board. The whole complex is just a mess, not clean and trash all over inside the gate, he needs to get this place cleaned up.

@spiderdust fixed, now, no more ringing, typical of what goes on in that complex.

@CookieMonster46 Can't they flip the switch to the fuse box and disconnect it? Oh, wait... batteries. I can't believe they feel this is acceptable.
