Do You Wear Fingernail Polish?

United States

I do, and I have for years. When I was an adolescent, I used to bite my fingernails, but when I realized how ugly they looked, I bought some nail polish and decided to never bite my nails again. And, I never did. Once I started selling jewelry, especially rings, I made sure that my nails were always well-groomed so that I could show off the rings. I still get lots of compliments on my hands and nails. Some males also wear nail polish. If they get a manicure, the technician usually finishes the task with a coat of clear nail polish, but some males wear different colors. Black polish is very popular with some that I know of. Lately, I’ve been hearing that nail polish is not a good idea, since it doesn’t let your nails breathe AND some nail polish contains toxic ingredients that can be absorbed into your skin. Yuk! I try to use polish only when I want to dress up or go out. Most of the time, my nails are polish-free so they can breathe. Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you. The color of the fingernail polish in ancient China, indicated your rank and position. I usually wear a coral color. I wonder what rank I would be? Hah!

While it might be true about nails needing to breath I wonder how many 'old' people there are who have worn polish all their lives with no bad consequences.

Like me, but how do I really know if it caused some of my aches and pains?

@JudyEv I guess you are right about that. Our bodies are exposed to many pollutants every day and there isn't a whole lot we can do about it, for the most part. Even shampoos and body lotions and deodorants contain chemicals that could harm us. It's best not to think about all these things though.

@IreneVincent I guess you don't but it's the same with a dozen other things like too much/too little sun, etc.

It used to be part of my makeup when I was working. Now I only do up when I am going out.

It's the same for me. Most of the time. It's better to let your nails breathe.

I used to wear nail polish but my nails have always been brittle. So I used to have to change my nail polish so often that is became such a chore I stopped putting on nail polish. Now sense now since I work at home and besides I couldn't write very well on my keyboard if I have long nails.

My nails do get in the way for typing on the keyboard and I can't play the guitar anymore because my nails are too long.

I wear it sometimes. The color I wear depends on my mood. I have some silver gel stuff that I really like.

@Dyvette16 I've been told that some of the cheap nail polishes like what you might purchase at the Dollar Tree contains dangerous chemicals. I don't know if its true or not, but anything that covers your nails for long periods of time can't be good for you. At least, I don't think so. Who really knows. I have a friend who has health problems and she avoids a long list of chemical based products. So, I try to be sensible about certain products that I suspect.
