The Year We Sold The Ponies The First Time

I've been going through old paperwork and came across a receipt where we 'sold' our two ponies to my father. This brought back a few painful memories. In 1980 we bought into a farm machinery business with two other couples. They put their farms up as surety for a massive bank loan which we should have been able to manage.
However we then ran into four years of drought at the end of which the bank was threatening to foreclose. The interest on the loan was horrific and without credit the business couldn't buy spare parts, etc. The drought meant farmers were also doing it tough and weren't buying new machinery.
The business got so close to being wound up that we really feared that the bailiffs could turn up at any time to seize anything of value. We 'sold' the horses to my father hence the receipt, signed a statutory declaration to say the piano also belonged to my parents, gave Vince's LP records to a brother for safe-keeping and sold a small freezer to a sister-in-law. We didn't have much else of any value.
Vince began applying for other positions and, once he found one, we walked away with nothing. The others carried on and were able to eventually trade out of their problems. If we hadn't left it was likely they would have lost their farms.
It was tough at the time but I'm not looking for sympathy. In the end, it all turned out for the best. And it is also nice that we managed to stay good friends with the four partners despite the circumstances. I wonder what will turn up in the next batch of paper.

Oh gosh, that must have been a real difficult time for you all! I'm glad you were at least able to save the valuables you had and that you were able to stay friends with your partners (many times it's quite the opposite!). I hope the ponies were ok too!

This is a good idea for churning out topics. Great way to rummage through old memories.

It's experiences like this that make life interesting and give us stories to tell. Painful, of course! But we move on and learn from it. Good for you to take steps to protect what little you had.

@JudyEv The English language can be funny at times I guess that is why it gets confusing to people who their native language isn't English.

They never actually went anywhere. It was just done so we'd have evidence that they weren't ours and so couldn't be taken from us. I don't think any money even changed hands. We had the receipt that we could have shown to the authorities and that was all we needed.

i never would have thought there was a time in your life that you didn't have much else of any value and eventually walked away with nothing given where you are now. your resilience is inspiring.

@Tampa_girl7 I'm sure many couples have gone through some tough times. We were probably lucky that this was the worse we faced.

It seemed like the worst possible thing at the time but all's well that ends well.

Yes, if it hadn't been for the drought I'm sure things would have been different.

@JudyEv - Isn't it amazing how old paperwork, a photo album, or even a child's drawing can bring back so many memories ... both beautiful and sad? I'm glad you all got through that situation and were able to remain friends.

You gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. I once had to sell off almost everything I owned, which is why I now keep it as minimal as possible.

It is actually very freeing isn't it, to get rid of lots of stuff. But it's a bit different if you're forced to rather than doing it of your own free will. I don't feel terribly 'free' yet.

True but they would be trying to get some of their money back.
