It's a cold and sunny morning here in the land of the horse race, contrasted against 70-degree weather and tornadoes a day ago. Oh, and did they say SNOW tonight? Yuck. And, speaking of "yuck," here's another one of those songs from the world of country music that did its best to set country music back 50 years or so. #3: Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus For me, this crappy song is the dividing line between country music's attempt to actually sound country and "country" music going, "Aw, what the hell, they're dancing and singing along to Romper Room lyrics, so if you wanna sound like Bon Jovi, go for it." The worst thing that Billy Ray Cyrus ever gave the world (yeah, even worse than his daughter, Miley). The things this did to country music (as opposed to for country music) are countless: stupid line dances, stupid songs, and mullets. And, naturally, it was a massive smash hit. It sold millions, won all kinds of awards, made Billy Ray an overnight superstar, and brought in millions of fans who hated country music, all of whom insisted that their country music sound like this or harder (see: "Shameless" by Garth Brooks), or else. Larry Cordle wrote a song about how the Nashville country music establishment committed "Murder on Music Row." We might not know exactly who fired the fatal shot, but this crappy song is definitely one of the smoking guns. Achy Breaky Heart Written by Don Von Tress Recorded by Billy Ray Cyrus From Some Gave All, 1992 (PS -- the song, "Some Gave All," is a great tribute to veterans) If you're going to play me a song with "ache," "break," and "heart" in the title, it had better be THIS one:
written by Rick Hall Recorded in June of 1962
