The Great Smoky Mountains North Carolina

Our 4th stop was in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. We did travel through Tennessee and saw some of the devastation caused by the huge fire in the mountains and Gatlinburg Tennessee this past November. We didn't stop there just drove through but saw many burnt trees and vegetation. We camped in the the North Carolina part of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. As we got there a bit late in the day the light was fading and we didn't get very good pictures but I wanted to share this one with you all. As the Smoky Mountains are so vast my husband and I are planning another trip there and will spend a few days hiking and enjoying the sights. We had reservations at a federal forest for the next day in South Carolina so we had to get going fairly early the next day, although we stopped at another National Park in South Carolina for a 2.4 mile hike before continuing on to the ocean. My hike in the Congaree National Park in South Carolina will be my next stop and post. I took this picture as the light was fading and I believe we were almost as high as the road we were on allowed when I took this. My ears plugged and unplugged several times as we went up and then back down. It was so beautiful that I am definitely going to go back to visit and spend some days hiking in the beautiful nature of the mountains.

I have visited this area, the little fog always over the mountains make them appear of different shades of smoke. Your photo is beautiful.

I love the Smoky Mountains. Have you ever seen the TV series, "Christy", with Kellie Martin and Tyne Daly? It takes place there. It's just beautiful country.

Nice shot, it really shows why they call them smokey. Is this the only shot you took of them?

We have just driven through the area on the way to Florida but I still remember the first time that I saw them... they really do have this "smokiness" to them. I had wondered how they had gotten the name. Hiking might be something that we need to do if we ever have the time to stop!!

They are named this because of the blue mist or fog that is almost always present around the peaks and valleys. The Cherokee Indians native to this area, call them " shaconage " ( shah-con-ah-jey ) meaning " Place of the blue smoke ".

We are home now, I just talked to my son as he is going all the way to the west coast, hopping from National Park to National Park, he is in Hot Springs Arkansas today. He is really enjoying Hot Springs. Thanks when I looked at the photo on my phone I was disappointed but it did come out pretty good.

Wow! I've never seen anything like that! I've been to the Adirondack mountains, a few miles north of me, and even climbed a couple mountains.. but they're fairly well spaced apart.. it's like one or two mountains then a few towns.. nothing like this! This looks like a sight to behold! We'll be in South Carolina in April.. maybe we'll have a chance to go near the Smoky Mountains!

My daughter was just talking about a road trip with her friends and they want to go to North Carolina and see the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With you saying you want to go back and how beautiful it seems from your description I'm going to encourage her to do this rather than going somewhere else for vacation.

It's an amazing place for nature lovers. They say there are over 5000 different plants and trees there more than any other place on Earth. Tell her to go they have so much to do there and she'll love it.

@fishtiger58 Maybe if there was sightseeing involved I might like camping more. As it is, I hate camping and haven't done it since I left home over 40 years ago.

@just4him My honeymoon was a 5 week camping trip. I was young and full of energy. Now I'm old and no way I could camp for 5 weeks, was too tiring. But I love to camp and will continue to do it until I can't physically do it anymore.

That is quite a good picture, I can see why you would want to return. My parents enjoyed visiting the Great Smoky Mountains also, they preferred the fall as the colours were so well displayed.

I'm sure the mountains in the fall are just stunning. I can't decide whether to visit in the summer to see all the flowers. or the fall to see the trees changing. Heck maybe I will got there both seasons.
