Favorite Bands You Might Not Know #5 - All About Eve

Alright, as Lynne Thigpen said in The Warriors, lets get down to it, boppers. #5 in my Favorite Bands You Might Not Know series is England's All About Eve. Named for the classic Bette Davis film, All About Eve was led by vocalist (and former Gene Loves Jezebel bassist) Julianne Regan. The band formed in 1984 and placed four albums in the Top 50 (two of them Top 10) in the UK. Although I don't really think so, All About Eve is often lumped in with the goth crowd, although before they successfully morphed into a shoegazer band, they had more of a folksy thing going on. In fact, the attached song is about the most goth thing they've done, and it's really not all that goth. The goth tag comes primarily from the band's association with The Mission. Regan performed backing vocals on The Mission's God's Own Medicine album. Mission leader Wayne Hussey did the backing vocals on the attached song, and then-Mission drummer Mick Brown played drums. Furthermore, All About Eve bassist Andy Cousins would go on to play in The Mission, keyboardist Ric Carter would come from The Mission, and guitarist Tim Bruchino would move on to Hussey's former band, The Sisters of Mercy. Got all that? Still not really goth, though. And did I mention that Julianne Regan has a gorgeous voice? Well, she does. (Info verified by Wikipedia)

You know how lazy journalists are: one song fits the genre and that's the label they get slapped with. It's like all of that stuff about Warren Zevon being "the Sam Peckinpah of rock and roll" when Excitable Boy came out. I listened to other things ("Farewell Mr. Sorrow" was quite nice) and you're right, not a goth band because they did one goth song. BTW, shouldn't they have gone on a tour with They Might Be Giants in "the movie double feature concert tour"?

@teamfreak16 -- I'm good at the "bizarre tour" mash-ups. I always wish Marvin Gaye and George Strait had toured together.

I did kind of gear it toward readers over here, didn't I? I forgot that they were actually kind of popular over there.

I definitely know of the movie and I'm pretty sure I've heard of the band, but I didn't really know the band. Thanks for shedding some light! Of course, being the 90s chick that I am, I know Eve 6, lol

Yeah, when you're looking them up, you have to put in "band" or all you get is the movie.

This is one of those groups that I've heard of, but don't think I've really listened to. There is a book called Rock Family Trees, which draws out the connections between bands of the 60s and 70s, like who played with whom. I am thinking we need an updated version for post 70s groups
