Lost in translation - Southern to Yankee!

Being up in age we look to hire people when necessary for some of the jobs that are not good for my husband or I to handle. We have no problem mowing - I love to mow. Weed eating is my husband's downfall. Since we have a large property some of the things I think need tending to he tends to ignore. He has finally manged to kill off most of the cat tails around the pond. They took over and they needed to be gone. But now we have ugly remains and lots of tall, dead weeds around the pond. We can't get close enough with the mower due to rocks, big rocks that would mess up the mower blades. So weed eating is the answer, but my husband doing it isn't the answer. I put an add in three local Facebook groups looking for someone to do weed eating. A guy named "Sam" replied right away. He lives in our little town, so I thought this should be a piece of cake. We decided that he would come here today - sometime around 3 of 4 to talk with my husband about the job/costs, etc. A few hours ago I thought I should contact him to make sure he is coming. Here is how it went: Me: Are we still on for sometime this afternoon around 3-4? Him: I sold it at 12 pm last night. Me: What? Him: Oh, am in Chattanooga with my ma-maw. She wanted flowers for a grave but she broke her arm. I had to bring her down here. Me: So will you be here later or not? Him: It depends on if I get back. Me: (Scratching head and thinking/wishing it's a bad dream) Me: I'll tell you what, you do what you need to do and I'll find someone else Him: k It is almost impossible to find someone will to do any work. I was given the name and number of a younger guy who has his own business, yard work business. Let's see if he calls back and if he does will he have an excuse too? I may have to learn how to use that manly weed eater or set those weeds on fire! Photo is mine. Obviously this was taken last summer!

I remember a customer who had a 10 AM appointment to b fitted for a dress. She waltzed in at noon and could understand why I didn't have time....I had a 12, a 12:15 and a 12:45 appointment already. Her comment...but I thought 10 was just a suggestion....an appointment is not a suggestion.

Maybe she is related to this guy LOL. An appointment at a bridal shop is way more important than an appointment with me.

@AbbyGreenhill it was supposed to make you laugh. I do understand your frustration.....but I've learned that laughing about it can save my sanity....no I'm not a Pollyanna....I can be an itchy b when I get my knickers in a twist.

There's no point giving people like him too many second chances.

I knew he wasn't getting a second chance. I though from the get-go it would not work out...you get a feeling about these things. Now I wonder what it was he sold at 12 pm.

I hear you on finding workers that will work. Cattails are pretty and provide habitat for birds.

Cattails suck the water out of the pond. Birds have enough habitat in on our property. They hang at the pond and poop all over the bench - they can poop elsewhere.

@sallypup I don't I dislike bird poop all over the pool area...they have lots of places to live away from me. The only birds that used those cattails were one type of bird - black, males have a touch of orange on the wing - the other birds never did go near those 'weeds'.

It sounds like Australia. Sometimes it seems that no-one wants to work.

@JudyEv I don't think people care about getting a bad name/reputation. Nothing seems to phase some people.

@AbbyGreenhill They'd be much better off just to say no. Otherwise all they're getting is a bad name.

This is very true, we have had some guys working on our basement off and on over the last year. Some did not show at all, some came late and left early, some got "sick" often. Getting people to work like they should is very difficult. I don't think they "make them like they used to"

They sure don't make them like they used to. You would 'assume' people want to make some money - I guess they are all richer than we think!

I have similar maintenance issues with my property. I can handle the yard when time and weather cooperate, but I've had several acres of field taken over by pine trees since not having someone to bush hog.

It's one thing or another - that back part of our land we can't mow due to the ruts - our tractor would fall in - so the neighbors mows it, we pay him but even he is getting to the point he 'forgets' and we pay him good for his one hour of time
