A fine example of British Cuisine at its best - the Pie Butty.

My friend Gill is a market stallholder and does a couple of weekly markets, one of them in the town of Wigan. Whilst most non-Brits probably haven't heard of Wigan, and those who have probably know it for George Orwell's book 'The Road to Wigan Pier', Wigan is famous for something else: Pie Eating. People from Wigan are referred to locally as 'Pie Eaters'. Allegedly - well according to Wikipedia - the name dates back to the General Strike of 1926 when striking workers were starved into returning to work, thereby 'eating humble pie'. Whether that's true or not, they are famous now for their love of a good pie. Gill was telling me that she saw a guy at the market take a large white bread roll, slather it in butter and then slap a whole meat pie between the two parts of the roll creating a 'pie butty'. Actually she claims when he finished, he had a second. Apparently there is no connection between Wigan and the popular football song "Who ate all the pies?", which is usually sung when a player, referee, linesman or other official is a bit on the chubby side.

This doesn't fall under the category of refined cuisine, does it?

It's probably still better than the pavement bhaji somebody insisted I try in Delhi.

A pie butty! Did you ever hear Bill Cosby talking about being able to eat anything if it's sandwiched in two layers of bread? In his case it's a whole quail complete with head! Very funny.

It's probably one of the less disgusting of Cosby's experiments.

The pie would be good but not with a bun around it.

I agree with that and I suspect that most Wiganners would too.

The pie looks appetizing, but not stuck into a bun!? Why is a sandwich called a butty? For the longest time I didn't know what a bacon butty was on Coronation Street. Not sure if I know still!

A good question. I knew it as a butty from childhood, but never wondered why.

@boiboing Barm is more common as a term in Manchester, whereas in Wigan the word butty was used.

@Asylum Technically what Gill described to me was a pie barm - but I figured if people were going to be confused by a 'butty' it wasn't worth risking the word barm.

I can't help concluding that the people of Wigan mught be consuming a high level of calories due to their love of pies.

Like so many things, everything in moderation doesn't do you too much harm. This chap eating two pie butties definitely WASN'T exercising moderation.

I didn't know about that Wigan nickname. Can we look forward to further posts about the chip butty and the crisp sandwich?

I don't know how I can eat a pie in a buttered bun. Sounds too much for me.

A pie in the photo looks the same as our buko pie. Which means we can also put the bread and we have pie butty
