ARE MYLOTTERS BECOMING A BIT OVER-ZEALOUS?

In the last few hours I have seen discussions by at least two members expressing regret about reporting a discussion and comments to admin. And last evening another member wrote a post about his reporting of a newbie and he was wondering if it was the right thing to do. Yes -- we do need alert members who are aware and try to limit the amount of rule breaking which goes on, - but just like a regular police force, some amount of training is needed. And in my view, the mylot training should take the form of ensuring that you yourself clearly understand the site's rules and guidelines before reporting someone. Unless of course -the offense is glaringly obvious. What are your thoughts?

I report the obvious, and if it is not obvious, I probably do not report. I am glad that admin has the final say about removal. I also do not tell people that I am reporting people.

I wouldn't tell people I was reporting them either. I can't see how it can help.

My thoughs are always give links to the guidelines. Just responding saying reported really isn't that helpful in my opinion. I'm not talking about a serial rule breaker with ten discussions in a row who isn't reading links previously left as I just report them and move on. I mean a new member...I was terrible when I was new and broke loads of rules but had help and am still here years later. Also I think it is time for the guidelines to be rewritten and be more explanatory and more specific...they're currently not good enough in my opinion.

@Mike Perhaps the rewriting could begin by replacing the loose-sounding word 'Guidelines' with 'Rules'.

@asfarasiknow that'd be a start Then make them way more specific and easier to understand.

While I understand that reporting is both necessary and requested in the Guidelines where it says A moderator will soon review the content and take appropriate action if necessary if something that is reported is NOT a viuolation, it will not be deleted therefore I see nothing wrong with reporting if we are in doubt. I know that many Lotters do not understand that this is a community and admins need help as they cannot always see everything immediately as soon as it is posted but they (the users) do not like 'snitching' or 'grassing' so they don't report at all, and I also understand that there are also some who report more than is necessary. There are also some who think that some things by some users are violations but 'certain' users (as they call them) never lose their posts - which just means that those posts are not violations at all. I think personally that it is better, when in doubt about something, to report it and bring it to admin's attention. If it is ok it will stay put. I also agree with @jujunme that many of the Lotters who are here for a long time know what needs reporting and can understand when something might appear to be a violation but is not removed.

As you might know, one of my posts was deleted 2 days ago. I know the rules as I´m an old mylotter. I think things might be getting out of hand.

that's not down to the members though. Your post may not even have been reported. The final say is down to admin and not other members...admin removes stuff all the time without receiving reports.

What I am saying here is that reporters should be sure the report is necessary before wasting their time and admins.

Jealous or zealous I don't know. But I would say there is nothing wrong in reporting anything which you feel is a violation of rules here as final judgement is to be made by admin himself. Moreover admin himself days he needs our support to deal with such responses and comments. Why don't you help him.

All I am saying is that more care should be taken in pointing out offenders. I doubt admin will be happy if they are flooded with reports of infractions which are not really infractions.

I don't think so. I think some Mylotters just reported who were breaking the rules here. I have not done it yet because I have not caught anybody yet.

I actually messaged some myLotters whom I have seen to be posting some things against the rules. They took my advise and revised them. It's better that I tell them immediately upon seeing the violation than their post suddenly deleted . The earnings will be put to waste.

I agree. It wouldn't really worry me if a post got deleted but some are highly offended - and once a discussion has been reported the wheels are in motion and the 'reporter' can't change their mind. I think we need to be quite sure we're doing the right thing before reporting anyone.

That is the point I am trying to make - because if as many have pointed out that in any case admin won't delete the post if there is no infraction - you are still wasting your time and admins. Therefore, all I am saying is be sure before you report.

Hm, I didn't see those posts, but I wouldn't be tempted to tell the parties in question to not worry about it. After all - admin will look at it , and if it isn't a justified report I would imagine that they wouldn't do anything.

Anyone who has been here for any length of time is quite aware of what should be reported and what should merely be ignored.if members are reporting for no good reason the post will most likely remain since it's up to the admin whether it should be deleted or not .and they are here very often going through hundreds and hundreds of posts also,i very rarely report anyone unless i feel it is an obvious guideline offense.

I am glad you are raising awareness with this post. I feel people are way to zealous to report things...obvious or not. Is it not more kinder to point out to the person that they may be in violation and ask that person to 'edit' if possible? I don't report post...and I will never do it. I don't see myself with 'policing powers' thank you. Personally, I find myLotters too harsh...but that's just my opinion.

@Gita17112016 I have tried the approach of explaining to people, and gotten told off for my trouble. People who break the rules here damage the credibility of the site and the earning power. I am not a police, but I do follow the rules and do want the site to retain its value.

@GardenGerty Firstly, to my understanding, there seems to be some 'censorship' at work and offending post are removed within a day or so. Isn't it better punishment to leave the post and when it is removed the person loses the money the comments had earned? I am sure this is a sure fire way of getting people to toe to line. Secondly, the credibility of the site could be damaged...true , I concede this point. I don't want that either. Thirdly, in my opinion, if you did leave a comment to raise the awareness of the person, then you have done quite a lot. Your comment will be seen by others and 'liked' showing others agree with you. If the person choose to ignore 'doing the right' thing' then let admin handle it. Lastly, my comment on 'policing powers' are not a slur on anyone and is not meant to be taken as such. I merely meant that we all have partial powers (to report) but that is a personal, last resort option. i don't see this as a first option.
