Where or When Do You Feel Most Helpless or like a Prisoner or Object?

I thought about this today while the dentist was drilling on me for an hour. I felt helpless as things were done to me I didn't like. When I got phlegm in my throat I thought I would choke. When fingers went in the wrong places I felt like I would gag. I knew I could put my hand up and they would stop and give me a break, and I had to do that a couple of times. But I knew I couldn't really go home until the dentist was finished and the crown was in. I feel most like an object sitting in the dentist chair while things are being done to me. I also feel like a prisoner, since I really have to stay until the dentist finishes the job. I was in the chair again today, although not as long as I was yesterday. I get to go back tomorrow. I don't remember any other three-day period in my life when I've spent over $3,300. That hurts, too. After tomorrow I get an eight-day break before I go back for the last crown. In what situations do you feel helpless, imprisoned, or like an object being acted upon? It's probably different for everyone. Or do you never feel this way?

I feel trapped when I have not left my home after a couple of days with no running vehicle. As I can't walk somewhere. I must depend on others.

I can understand that. I dread the day when I can't drive anymore. At least I live close to shopping, my banks, and even my dentist, so I could walk, if necessary. I just wouldn't get to shop where the prices are lowest.

@bagarad I still can drive. I bought a truck but have to wait to get it tagged and insurance. It will be a few weeks. It is my first vehicle in four years. Pretty shortly I won't feel so trapped at home.

Hmm.. When I am at work or when I'm waiting in a doctor's office to be seen. Especially when the door is shut and you are waiting for the doctor to arrive. You sit there for what seems like an eternity.

I don't mind just waiting as long as I have a book with me. I got almost an entire half book read at the dentist's yesterday while waiting -- first to get seen and then for quite a long time while waiting for the crown to be made. I had to wait longer than usual because the machine wasn't working right, but they let me out of my "cell" so I could wait back in the waiting room where it was more comfortable.

Yours is true imprisonment. I did feel that way when I had to bed rest after my accident.

I can understand why you would feel that way. I felt confined to my recliner and my bed after I had foot surgery in 2014 and had to keep my feet elevated. After my neck surgery I had to take a long walk every day but could not ride in a car for several weeks except for doctor visits. That wasn't as bad, because I could at least move around the house and get out of the house.

What you went through would be enough to make anyone feel like a prisoner.

I can so relate to all of this as I'm due there tomorrow. And you're right - you do feel helpless and 'stuck' virtually flat on your back in the chair.

Will it be for an hour? Yes. This really makes one feel quite like prisoner.

I have about an hour of drilling. Then about 30 minutes to wait while they make the crown. Then I have another 30-45 minutes while they place the crown.
