The most popular dog breed is....

Labradore Retriever, labs, Ruby, hip issues, most popular
United States

....for the 26th consecutive year the most popular dog breed is Ruby - I mean the Labrador Retriever! It has been my favorite breed longer than that. It started in the 70's when my parents got a black lab named Clyde. Clyde was a big boy, over 125 pounds. When he stood on his hind legs he could look my father in the eye. Unfortunately, Clyde didn't live longer than 3 years. His hips were so bad even surgery would not have been a good option. He was in pain and my parents would not let him suffer, they loved him too much. Our first lab, Abby, had it also. She lived on Deramaxx the last 8 years of her life. It enabled her to be pain-free, but she always had problems sitting or standing. Thank goodness Ruby has no hip issues! Labs do have several medial issue - ear infections and hot spots are two other besides the hip issues. But with proper vet care those issues can be taken care of. Photo is mine, so is Ruby! Sorry about this little trip down memory lane, but the mention labs leads to memories of ourthers

We had a border collie lab mix when our children were growing up. We could not have had a better dog.

A dog with any amount of lab in it is a great dog!

@AbbyGreenhill now we have Fifi....an American Eskimo. When she expires....we probably won't be getting a replacement. She's getting to be an old dog.

@Morleyhunt I don't think we would get another after this one. Ruby will be six next month so she could have another 6 or more years and by then my husband would be pushing 80..OMG...that's scary.

I wonder if one had a good option for a half lab half something, if they'd have better health options

Then it would not be an pedigree - and there are already breeders doing part lab part poodle I think it is.

It's so sad when animals have these issues. Same with kids. I don't think it's fair. My grandma had a brown LR and when he passed we tried to get her another so she wouldn't miss him so much. She wouldn't have it. Brownie was such a love.

@AbbyGreenhill .....You should be very proud to have helped her not have one.

Ruby was diagnosed with EIC - which is Exercise Induced Collapse...however, she has never had one episode - thank God. Now that she is almost six she probably never will have one.

My favorite breed is Mutt and most of mine have been mixed German Shepherds ..... sometimes I try to figure out what other breeds they're mixed with but it's not always that easy. Ruby is a Beauty, of course.

We did run into one that wasn't so nice years ago - at a rental in SC. The owner of the house had 6 rescues, one was a lab that was gong to a shrink - seriously...she attacked Abby and Abby was like, what did I do?

I do agree with you Labrador Retriever is even my favourite. It is friendly and also working dog very efficient with its work. I know a fisherman having Labrador Retriever and I was amazed with the help he get from his pet. Say like fetching the nets, ropes its awesome.. Even the view was awesome. They are also known for the dog of the handicapped and are said to provide them with lots of assistance. And perhaps they are also good as the search and rescue dogs.

I have always loved Labs too but we have a lab now that is not very smart, she hates other dogs and she's not good with little kids either. I grew up with labs and they were always the opposite of this dog. Makes it hard to keep the dogs separate all the time. I also have a Rott/Lab mix and she is the sweetest dog ever who is amazing with all children and likes other dogs too.

Was the bad one a rescue or did someone give her to you? Maybe the dog had issues as a pup and wasn't trained properly. As much as I love dogs, if I had a dog that didn't like kids, and I had kids, the dog would have to find a new home for safety sake.

@AbbyGreenhill I haven't had a dog since I was a kid, but my brother raises Miniature Bull Terriers, and just had a litter of 8. The mother is "Mr." Toyota in commercials for a car dealership.

It is interesting to see how the most popular dog breed is different from country to country. In the UK the Cocker Spaniel is as popular as the Labrador Retriever, while the German Shepherds are the most popular breed in France and Germany. The Labrador is also the most popular here in Switzerland.

@AbbyGreenhill Labs are lovely dogs, I remember the one of my niece, she was stubborn, but so sweet.

@LadyDuck They do have stubborn in them. Inside if I call her she comes running. Outside, I could call her until the cows come home and she won't listen.

This result is from the AKC I believe - and that's the American Kennel Club so it would make sense it would be different on other countries. And the lab never won best in show - I would loved to see that happen one day!

Labs are super gentle. I have no fear of sticking my nose right up to her nose or puting my hand in her bowl when she is eating. I could probably take food out of her month w/o an issue - not that I plan on doing that LOL

No complaints here... my first dog was a golden lab... and my third dog a black lab... then we moved onto mixed breeds from shelters... but I love the lab and the retriever....they are such faithful loving dogs ... and now I love patterdale terriers which is what we have at the moment...

After having that dog of my parents, we don't allow dogs to stand up - Ruby isn't that big bug she could knock over a thin person by accident. When someone new enters the yard or house she sits and offers her paw.
